“Perch” Maynard was a long time guide on the New River before up and moving to South Carolina in order to battle redfish and speckled trout rather than smallmouth bass. “Perch” received his nickname from the legendary fly tier and fishing guide, Chuck Kraft. Chuck teasingly told Maynard that when it came to fishing, he was little more than a perch jerker, and the name stuck. “Perch” wore it … [Read more...]
My Legacy
By Alan Bittman Not to sound melancholy, but someday all of us will be gone, leaving behind memories and a legacy. No, I am not depressed but, rather, proud that I have already made my bequest. I was wise enough to share my love of the outdoors with my sons and daughter. I started taking them with me when they were quite young, haunting Greene County’s South River in the spring and … [Read more...]

Trophy of a Lifetime
For a deer hunter, sometimes it takes a lifetime to finally bag the buck of your dreams. In the case of Otto Sherwood, it took 93 years. That was Otto’s age when he dropped this trophy deer on December 12th in Louisa County. The buck scored 181 5/8, a genuine trophy animal. Most of us are just hoping to make it to 93 years. For Otto, it was well worth the wait. Who knows what he’ll bag when he … [Read more...]
An Unbelievable Deer Hunt
By Sherman T. Shifflett Friends: This is an unbelievable hunting story, and I am not making it up. Around 1970 I started deer hunting, mostly around Louisa County, VA, but I have deer hunted all around Central Virginia. During those 45 years, I've experienced many enjoyable moments, have seen a lot and could write a book. But, today (Thursday, November 5, 2015) takes … [Read more...]
