It is 190 miles from Charlottesville to Greensboro via Rt. 29. I know the stretch well, as my daughter Angelin and her family live in North Carolina and there are grandchildren and a great-grand child there that require regular visits. There is also one place to eat along the way that has the best fried chicken you have ever put in your mouth. And that is the Chicken Coop at the Nelson Food … [Read more...]
The Galley Restaurant: Deltaville’s Finest
The Galley Restaurant has been around for quite a while. I ate there with my old friend Bill Trevillian about 30 years ago. Since then, it has changed hands several times and even closed down for a while. But it’s back up and running and is – in my opinion – Deltaville’s premiere restaurant. We have eaten there each time we visit Deltaville or Gloucester and have never been disappointed. It’s a … [Read more...]
Country Fried Goodness
The Texas Roadhouse is just around the corner from our house. It’s easy to get to, there are almost always a couple seats open at the bar (where we like to eat), the prices are fair, and the food is really good. Naturally, it’s one of our top choices for dining out. Last week, I arrived home after a couple days on the road and we decided to hit “The Loud Place” for dinner. Nancy calls it the … [Read more...]
Golden Skillet Fried Chicken
Nancy and I found ourselves on Rt. 29 S below Chatham around dinner time and we were hungry. I had seen the Golden Skillet Restaurant there many times as we passed through TightSqueeze (a town, really). I remembered eating at a Golden Skillet years ago and it was good then. It still is. Really good. We went inside to eat, and each ordered a small Fried Chicken Platter. Before I could … [Read more...]
Boar’s Head for Fine Dining
When we think of going out to a nice, local restaurant, lots of names pop up, but not Boar’s Head. Somehow, I think of that as a touristy sort of place, and it never comes into play as a potential dining destination. Last weekend, however, we attended an event at Boar’s Head running from 7:30 to 9 so we had to grab a bite before the show and Nancy chose the Mill Room at Boar’s Head. Wow! It … [Read more...]
The Galley in Deltaville
Nancy wanted seafood on her birthday night while we were vacationing on the Middle Peninsula, and I knew just the place. The Galley in Deltaville. We had reservations and it’s a good thing. They were packed. The Galley is a favorite of the locals who pour into the Deltaville area from Richmond on weekends. The bar was hopping with inside and outside tables. Nancy ordered the Fried Oysters and I … [Read more...]
Fiorano: A New Italian Classic
I had heard about Fiorano, a new restaurant north of Charlottesville. The reviews were very positive. On Father’s Day, Nancy and I ate there and, indeed, the food is very good. Fiorano is an Italian Restaurant with both a Mediterranean and Indian influence. The flavors are enchanting. For appetizers were ordered both the Calamari and their Caprese, a blend of Fresh Mozzarella, Roma Tomatoes, … [Read more...]
Road Trip to Cross Keys
There are a zillion wineries and vineyards in Virginia. We may run out of eggs at the grocery store, but we’ll have plenty of wine for the foreseeable future. A good many of these venues offer both tastings of their wines and food as well. Most are good, but one is exceptional. And that’s Cross Keys Vineyards in Mt. Crawford, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. When a lazy and an … [Read more...]
“Dogging” It at Sam’s Hot Dog Stand
I found myself in the Shenandoah Valley around lunch time last Saturday. My timing was perfect because when I passed through Stuart’s Draft, there was a Sam’s Hot Dog Stand along Rt. 340. I ordered 2 all-beef franks, a bag of chips and a Pepsi and it was the tastiest $6 I’ve ever spent. I adore Sam’s Hot Dogs. I think Sam’s started in their little hole in the wall on Main Street in … [Read more...]
El Agave Restaurant
Cinco de Mayo is coming soon. That’s when people that don’t even like Mexican food pretend that they do and wash it down with a Margarita. I like Mexican food, mostly, and I always like a good Margarita. When I think good Mexican food, I think El Agave in Ruckersville. I’m not the greatest one to write a review about Mexican restaurants. When we go, my wife Nancy often has to … [Read more...]
