“Noah! Make yourself an Ark of gopherwood. Make it 300 cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits tall. Make rooms in the Ark and cover it inside and outside with pitch.”
That was a tall order from God, but one completed by Noah and his family as the floods came and covered the earth for 40 days.
The Noah story is recreated in Lancaster in the sprawling Sight and Sound Theater. What a performance and what a venue!
The 2,000-seat theater has a wrap-around stage of 300 feet. A cast of over 50 actors and dozens of live animals performed. The play stretched 2 ½ hours and the audience was greeted to a brilliant recreation of the Noah’s Ark story from the book of Genesis.
As an audience, we felt as if we were in the Ark itself with rooms of animals (two of each kind) flanking the auditorium. Actors and the animals roamed the aisles. It was brilliantly choreographed, and a stage set for entertainment of the first order.
The play was a musical, of sorts. There was dancing, singing, praying, and fighting. Many animals had been trained to enter and exit the Ark on their own. It was simply amazing.
This marks the 30th anniversary of Noah and it runs through the end of this year. It’s a wonderful opportunity for church groups or families to relive an important part of the bible.
