I have been buying the Supreme Blend of bird seed from Sam’s Club. It is absolutely the best buy in bird seed, and it has none of the little red seeds (milo) which go to waste and attract rodents. When I spreads it on the ground, I have noticed the little birds – the snowbirds, song sparrows and gold finches pecking away, but not at the sunflower seeds. They were eating the small, White Proso Millet seeds and there really aren’t very many in the blend. It’s hard to find bags containing only proso millet, since it’s generally mixed with other seeds, so I bought a 15-pound bag from Amazon.
Each morning I scatter a coffee mug full of millet on the ground and within minutes, the snowbirds, sparrows, finches, and doves are pecking away. White proso millets seed is a widely used as an ingredient in bird seed formulations. This seed is rich in protein, carbohydrates and many minerals and is highly nutritious. Most all the small birds love it. You can mix it and make your own seed blends or do as I do and offer it by itself.
Now, at my Back Yard Bird Cafeteria, I provide sunflower chips for the bluebirds, peanuts (for the jays and woodpeckers), the Supreme Blend with black oil sunflower seeds (for most birds) and white proso millet for the little guys. I think I now have all the bases covered.
