Most often, my resident bluebirds will nest twice, then call it quits. On several occasions, however, they go for a third try as mine did this year. I don’t know why they do this unless they lost one nest or had a poor survival rate with the chicks. I know that two babies were around after the first nest, but the second nest vanished before I could get head count.
This year’s pair has been one of the least friendly of all.
They never really trusted me, even though they saw me filling their bowl with
meal worms. They kept their distance until I had moved far away. Sometimes, my
bluebirds will practically land on my shoulder when I go out to feed them, but
not this year.
As
a rule, birds return to the same location to nest the following year. Catbirds
do, for sure, and I always have two pair. Usually, the bluebirds never really
leave. I hope mine choose to nest here again and I hope they are a little more cordial.
And I really hope they don’t try for three nests again. It’s just too hot in
July.
