If there seems to be a shortage of finches, sparrows, and snowbirds in your yard, it’s because they are all over at our house. I counted over 60 assorted house finches, gold finches, snowbirds and sparrows scratching away at the feeders and scattered seeds last week when ice and snow covered the ground. Lots of birds fly to the feeders but many of the little birds enjoy finding seeds on the ground. The goldfinches, however, are still flocking to my thistle feeder. There are two or three pecking away at the tiny seeds at all times.
We have tons of both finch species – house finches and goldfinches. They hang around most of the year, except at nesting time in June when the goldfinches become scarce.
My snowbird flock is the largest ever. While I usually have 8 or 9 residents from November until March, I have about 20 or more this year.
Birds come because I put out a wide variety of seeds and we keep water in the birdbaths. Soon, there will be bugs and new seeds to eat, but in the meantime, I scatter all kinds of seeds for my little friends.
