The hummingbirds in our yard are fattening up, so to speak, as they prepare for their fall flights to Mexico. By fattening up, I mean gaining maybe a half ounce as they visit our sugar feeders throughout the day. They are also resting comfortably, swinging actually, right beside our feeders. Last spring, Nancy bought several hummingbird swings and positioned them around the yard, including two on the front porch beside tow of our feeders. They love their little swings – saves them trips to and from the treetops. Also, by perching on the swings they are able to easily defend their turf from other thieving hummers who try to get in on the feeder action.
Yesterday, we saw two hummers on the swings at the same time and they weren’t at war. Must have been “maties” and you don’t see that often.
We figure our hummingbirds will hang around about two more weeks before they fly the coop. In the meantime, we are keeping the feeders full and the swings close by. It’s been a good year for hummingbird watching.
