I have 3 crows that regularly make the rounds in my back yard. That’s because they know they will usually find some goodies – like whole kernel corn – scattered about. And sometimes they find their favorite snacks – pieces of stale bread that I have tossed out for the birds. They will grab the bread before the corn, peanuts, or seeds.
The first thing they do is fly to the pond or a birdbath and dip the bread in the water, then gobble it down. Then, back to the back for more bread.
Crows are extremely intelligent birds. They are capable of using tools, they can recognize human faces and have an amazing vocabulary. Some say their intelligence is equal to apes. Their reasoning is on par with a 7-year-old child. They are equal to primates in the size of their brains in relation to their bodies. Their memories are better than many older adults. They can remember where they stored food for months on end, and they can remember the routes of garbage trucks that may spill food along the way.
Farmers are not fond of crows because they pull up new shoots of corn and grain and can make off with baby chicks and hen eggs.
But I like having them around because they give hawks fits and I had rather have crows that hawks any day.
Guess I’ll go toss the some more bread, so they’ll remember me.
