We position the cage of our pet parakeet, Foster, beside the window in the den. She enjoys seeing and hearing the birds outside. Sometimes she fusses at them and sometimes she chirps and tweets, but it keeps her occupied and entertained. The feeder I use to attract the birds is a glass bowl, fly-through feeder. Birds can eat from the rim or hop inside during bad weather.
The largest bird I have seen enter is a cardinal. Throughout the day, we see chickadees, titmice, bluebirds, sparrows, finches, and all sorts of small birds popping in and out. I use the red-hot pepper juice to keep the squirrels at bay. The little hanging feeder is perhaps the most popular feeding station in my yard, and I have several. I think the small songbirds like it because they feel somewhat protected while they are feeding, Hawk attacks often come at open feeders. I also think that the bird are naturally attracted to the colorful feeder.
We bought our feeder at Springdale Gardens in Greenville. The owner had it on sale – said she couldn’t sell the things to save her soul.
I checked with Amazon, and they have a nice selection. Get the 9-inch size if you order one. It’s the perfect size for small birds – and you will attract many.
