We’re in a drought; at least we are here in Central Virginia. Albemarle County officials said they’d line us all up in a firing squad if they caught us watering our gardens or lawns. Fortunately, we had an inch of ran Tuesday night, which helped, but we’re still in a drought. The reservoir looks like Moses parted it and left it half empty.
During dry weather, everybody worries about lawns and shrubs, but I worry about the birds. Birds require water as much as food. That’s why we keep several sources of water in our yard and the birds are thankful.
I hadn’t seen my robins in a while, till it got extremely dry, then they were back, lined up at the birdbath. Robins love to splash and bathe, as do bluebirds, cardinals and others.
To keep the Water Nazis at the county from bringing in the heavy artillery, we recycle water. A great source is from our de-humidifier in the basement, which collects about 3 gallons every other day. That is the purest or pure water and it goes directly in the birdbath. If we are canning or boiling a bunch of water, we save that, too. When I turn on the water and wait for it to get hot, I try to save that water as well.
I speak for the birds. Save them a little water and put it out somewhere in your yard. They will appreciate it and add beauty to your back yard.
