By the Backyard Birds
Hey Santa, we’ve been pretty good birds this year. Other than pecking at a few unfriendly starlings and pooping on some lawn furniture, we’ve behaved ourselves, so how about some treats for us this Christmas?
For starters, we really need a heater for the bird bath (and some of us need a bird bath bowl as well – they must think we don’t need to drink water from December through March). The little heaters are not very expensive, they don’t use much electricity and they keep our drinking water from freezing.
While we’re on a roll, how about a big bag of sunflower chips. This stuff is like candy and all of us can eat it – even bluebirds. It costs a little more than that cheap birdseed, but not much more and there is no filler nor waste.
Two down, two to go.
Next on our list is a Peanut Log. It’s like suet, but mostly peanuts. All birds like this stuff and it provides quick energy. If you can’t find any logs, most any suet works. But a Peanut Log is what we really prefer.
Finally, and this is for all us little birds that don’t like to fly up to feeders – those that would prefer to peck on the ground – birds like snowbirds, sparrows and doves. We’d like a big bag of white proso millet, or a seed assortment with mostly millet. Toss a little under the shrubs and bushes that’s where we feel most protected and prefer to eat.
Hope you and Mrs. Claus have a great Christmas. By the way, we’ll go to bed extra early on Christmas Eve and you don’t even have to come down the chimney.
