I saw something this morning I had never seen before – or at least I had never noticed. There was an adult robin in the dogwood tree in the front yard fluttering its wings. I have seen bluebird adults do this to keep in touch and I have often seen baby birds flutter their wings to be fed, but never an adult robin.
I believe it was a female trying to attract a male or at least say, “Hey, I think you’re cute. Let’s lay some eggs together.”
It’s hard to tell a male and female robin apart. The female has less orange and less black on the head, but I couldn’t tell for sure, but it seemed like something a female bird would do.
I know the males fight each other. That is happening right now. Ultimately, two pairs of robins will share our yard. The tree in which the robin was fluttering has often been used as a nesting site. Robins wait a bit longer to nest than other birds because they wait until the tree leaves are fully developed for better protection.
There is one robin I our yard now all aflutter. I expect her to soon be on the nest.
