If you don’t have any house finches or gold finches in your yard, it’s because they are all over at my house. I mean all of them. I have vast colonies of finches, and sparrows, and they swarm to my feeders every day, throughout the day – and they have been eating me out of house and home. I enjoy feeding the birds, but I also enjoy feeding my family. Feeding all these finches (plus the other birds) is expensive. They can drain 5 pounds of bird seed from a feeder in a day or two.
I have always advised not buying bird seed with so-called fillers – milo, wheat, oats and millet – but I recently bit the bullet and bought a 40-pound bag of Pennington Classic Wild Bird Feed at Sam’s Club. It has some of the lower quality seeds, but it has a good amount of sunflower and other songbird favorites. I bought it because it was just $19.95 a bag, which works out to 50c a pound. I wanted to see if the finches would eat all the seeds – and they did.Plus, the doves ate any spillage so there was really no waste.
To supplement my economy seed, I also put out sunflower hearts for the bluebirds, so everybody in my yard is happy. I am particularly happy because the $20 bag of Pennington lasts a long time – even with my multiple flocks of finches. Next time you buy bird seed, check and see how much you are paying per pound.
