The Violin Panhandler

October 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Charlottesville has emerged as one of the top cities in the country for beggars. On nearly every major corner and intersection, there is a panhandler with a cardboard sign saying, “Homeless. Anything helps. God bless.” It must be working because they are at it every day. One guy on the corner near Kroger’s Rio Hill should be paying rent. Flanking the healthy looking 35-year-old were multiple … [Read more...]

Conservation Mowing?

October 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

We live in Woodbrook, abutting the school yard. A month or so ago, whoever mowed the school grounds left several acres unmowed and erected signs saying, “Conservation Mowing.” They were letting the grass grow to somehow benefit wildlife. That’s total rubbish. The grass they have allowed to grow is knee high fescue, which actually is a detriment to wildlife habitat. It’s the single reason that … [Read more...]

October Doormats

October 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

October is here, and with it comes a change in the fishing scene. Some of the summer fish start to leave, the waterways become less crowded, and the fish become more active. It’s a wonderful time of the year to be on the water, weather permitting. Flounder fishing in the Bay is winding down, but Captain Craig Paige still managed to land a couple of citation-sized flounders on a recent … [Read more...]

TV’s, Old and New

September 28, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I was watching a football game on TV recently when I realized that the picture was so vividly clear, I thought I could have been sitting in the stands. We have a nice TV, but nothing special, yet the picture is brilliant. Most al of them are today. What a change from our first TV! I remember the day that my brother Pat and I waited and watched for the Appliance Store’s truck to pull in the … [Read more...]

Cooking Toads

September 28, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Just a hunch, but I doubt many of my Cville Buzz readers will be cooking up a batch of “toads” anytime soon. But if you ever get the chance, don’t pass it by. By “toads”, I am referring to Puffer Fish or Blow Fish, commonly called “toads” by the locals. Puffers happen to be an ocean delicacy. We had some last week and they were delicious. The local seafood market in Deltaville had them on … [Read more...]

Remembering Harvey Shifflett

September 28, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Sherman Shifflett   Ed. Note: My late friend, Sherman Shifflett, was writing a book about his father, Harvey Shifflett, but was never able to finish it. Below are some excerpts he sent me several years ago. As you can tell, it would have been a great book.   Dad kept an inordinate number of roosters. One day mom asked him why he kept so many roosters. He replied, "I don't … [Read more...]

Home Lighting Do’s and Don’ts

September 28, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Please consider these useful DO’s and Don’ts when it is time to buy and install your home lighting fixtures! First off, DO have fun with the process and never get rushed.  Lighting is the jewelry of your home. I know, I know, it can be overwhelming when your electrician or contractor tells you they are ready to install lighting right away and asks you to get your fixtures. We have customers who … [Read more...]

The Galley Restaurant: Deltaville’s Finest

September 28, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The Galley Restaurant has been around for quite a while. I ate there with my old friend Bill Trevillian about 30 years ago. Since then, it has changed hands several times and even closed down for a while. But it’s back up and running and is – in my opinion – Deltaville’s premiere restaurant. We have eaten there each time we visit Deltaville or Gloucester and have never been disappointed. It’s a … [Read more...]

The Gloucester Wine Festival

September 28, 2023 by Jim Brewer

There are “Festivals” for everything – Oysters, Crabs, Blueberries, Garlic, Apples. You name it and it has a “Festival”. There is one Festival, however, worth remembering, and that’s the Wine Festival in Gloucester. This one is special. We were on a mini vacation at Gloucester last weekend, and someone mentioned the Wine Festival in town. The event was scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, but it … [Read more...]

The Best Time to Fish

September 28, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I have always heard that the best time to fish saltwater was the day before or the day after a hurricane. Last week, I had the opportunity to check out that theory, and it was right on. After we had booked our VRBO cottage on Ferry Creek near the Piankatank River, we found out that Hurricane Ophelia would be passing through during our stay. Since we would not be taking a direct hit, we decided to … [Read more...]
