Tomato Update

October 26, 2023 by Jim Brewer

My four tomato plants think it’s summer. They’re still blooming, and I get daily pickings. My last year’s tomato crop was a complete bust, but this year the delicious fruits are making up for lost time. The only drawback is some of the current ‘maters have slight blemishes whereas the first ones were near perfect. But who cares? Remove the spots and eat them. As I mentioned before, the only … [Read more...]

Hold Off on Fall Clean Up

October 26, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Stephen Living/DWR With the weather turning colder and hints of red and gold starting to paint the trees, gardener’s thoughts may turn towards “cleaning up” their landscape. This can include cutting down the spent flowers and dead stalks of the plants and grasses that provided valuable habitat to the wildlife in our spaces during the warmer months. Not so fast! Your Habitat at Home … [Read more...]

It’s Time for Soup

October 26, 2023 by Jim Brewer

It’s fall, and that means raking leaves, football Saturdays, Halloween, and soup. Nothing beats the celebration of a crisp, fall afternoon like a bowl of good soup. I made some last week. Really good Creamy Potato Soup. Like most everything I make, it was super easy, and it all fit nicely in my crock pot. Here’s how. First, put a liner in your crockpot for easy clean-up. Add one 30-oz. … [Read more...]

Let’s Celebrate Bat Week

October 26, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Holy Chiroptera. It’s Bat Week! Naturally, it’s Bat Week. It’s Halloween week, too. In actuality, October 24-31 is an international, annual celebration designed to raise awareness about the need for bat conservation. Bats are amazing creatures that are vital to the health of our natural world and economy, but like Rodney Dangerfield, bats don’t get any respect, and many are scared out of … [Read more...]

Trout, Trout and More Trout

October 26, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The speckled trout bite is on fire. The sleek fish are shallow and they’re hungry. Some huge fish are being caught in Little Creek, the Elizabeth River, the Piankatank River, the Rappahannock River, and many of the shallow creeks feeding these waters. Puppy drum are coming from the same spots. Nighttime has been the right time for rockfish. They love to snuggle up to bridges and … [Read more...]

The Greatest Show on Earth

October 19, 2023 by Jim Brewer

And it was. When the Barnum and Bailey and Ringling Bros. circus came to town, it was the Greatest Show on Earth, and an event that every Boomer child looked forward to seeing. It all started when the Ringling brothers traveled to New England to see the established Barnum and Bailey Circus. The two circuses then agreed to divide the U.S. rather than compete head-to-head. The Ringling’s … [Read more...]

Maple Dijon Drumsticks

October 19, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I was in Kroger’s this week and saw a family pack of chicken drumsticks for five bucks. I hadn’t planned on drumsticks for a meal, but this was too good to pass up and I happen to like drumsticks. There were a dozen fat chicken legs in the package, enough for 2 meals. $2.50 a meal for 2 people? You can’t beat that in these days of spiraling inflation. Now, what to do with all these … [Read more...]
