By Molly Kirk/DWR John Bralley of Draper, Virginia, has hunted off and on his whole life, but hadn’t hunted seriously for more than 20 years until this fall a friend convinced him to go out again. “We went on a couple of hunts together and really didn’t see anything,†Bralley said. “I kind of was having my doubts about seeing anything and was getting discouraged.†The … [Read more...]
Giant Bluefins for Christmas
Giant bluefin tuna have shown up in numbers off Virginia Beach. The fish are strung out from Morehead City, NC to Maryland. Slot size fish have been caught in 50 to 60 feet of water off Smith Island, where there are a lot of Omega Menhaden boats competing for their food source. Oversized fish have been released to the south, near the Chesapeake Light tower. Catches have come from as … [Read more...]
The Reddi Whip Massacre
Coach Ryder had scheduled junior high basketball practice over the Christmas Holidays. Those who wished not to be perpetual bench warmers would be wise to attend. Thus, I begged my parents to let me stay in Lewisburg rather than attend a funeral and an extended stay in North Carolina. I asked my close buddy and fellow basketball teammate, Dave Gladwell, if his family could put me up for … [Read more...]
A Special Time of Year
By Nancy B Hello Friends! This blog has nothing to do with the lighting in our showroom but The Light of the World. I want to brag on my husband a bit. Jim Brewer has just published “While Shepherds Watchedâ€. It is a short story describing how he thought things might have been among the shepherds keeping watch in the fields outside Bethlehem on the first Christmas Eve. We have … [Read more...]
Chicken Patty Parmesan
Chicken Parmesan is one of the great dishes of all times. It’s rich, elegant, tasty, and economical. For a weekday night meal or for company, Chicken Parm is hard to beat. But here’s another way to fix it and it’s easier. Instead of a chicken breast, use ground chicken patties. It cooks quickly and it’s guaranteed to be tender and juicy. First, make the patties. I use a pound of … [Read more...]
A Robin with A White Head
“What bird is that drinking at the pond?†Nancy said. “Come see.†It was a black-ish bird with an orange breast and a white head. “I guess it’s a robin with a white head,†I responded, and I had never seen one before. It’s a result of leucism when defects in pigment cells cause afflicted birds or animals to become whitish, or more commonly, a mix of whitened zones along … [Read more...]
Outback Variety
The Outback was once our go-to restaurant. It was just around the corner, and in minutes after we made the decision not to cook at home, we were sitting at the bar or a table and scanning the menu. Then, Outback moved to a much larger location further down Rt. 29 and they were severely understaffed for a while and the service and quality suffered. But they have recovered nicely. For my birthday … [Read more...]
Thoughts On Being a Senior
I'm going to retire and live off my savings. Not sure what I'll do the second week. Old age is coming at a really bad time! I don't have gray hair. I have "wisdom highlights". My people skills are just fine. It's my tolerance of idiots that needs work. Even duct tape can't fix stupid ... but it can muffle the sound! The kids … [Read more...]
Rockfish Action
The jumbo striped bass are beginning to enter the bay and are tugging on rods on the Eastern Shore near Cape Charles. Smaller “Rocks†are being caught around the CBBT and up into the Rappahannock and James Rivers. Big, speckled trout continue to prowl the inlets on the western side of the bay. Puppy drum are available as well. Some terrific sea bass action is happening on the deep-water wrecks … [Read more...]
A Fishy Garden
On a December morning many years ago - I suppose it was around the time Rose Mary Woods accidentally erased 18 minutes from his President Nixon’s secret tapes – a half dozen of us rose before dawn to drive and meet a charter captain at Callao for a fishing trip on the Chesapeake Bay. As I recall, several on the trip had finished their first Bloody Mary’s before we got to Richmond and then … [Read more...]
