My two suet feeders have been getting more and more attention with the arrival of winter. I have had nuthatches, downy woodpeckers, red bellied woodpeckers, sparrows, chickadees, titmice, bluebirds, and wrens squeezing in and out of the suet cages. Cardinals, and mockingbirds will also come to suet feeders, but I haven’t seen them at the feeders in my yard. Maybe later. Suet is an inexpensive … [Read more...]
I Speak for the Trees
Like the Lorax, I speak for the trees, and this Lorax says don’t waste your Christmas tree – recycle it! Christmas is over. It’ll soon be time to un-decorate the tree, drag it out to the curb and let the trash guys do their thing. But not so fast! A Christmas tree has many uses after the holiday season is over. For one, it makes ideal cover for small birds as they face the coming winter. … [Read more...]
Careful What You Wish For
A couple weeks before Christmas, I was reminiscing with a friend about how great it was to get a Lionel train for Christmas. Then I wrote about a childhood experience with a train set. My wife, Nancy, was paying attention and damned if I didn’t get one for Christmas. It was a genuine Lionel Polar Express Battery-operated set, not one of those old metal ones that cost a thousand bucks. But it … [Read more...]
Tips on Fishing Tidal Rivers
By Alex McCrickard/DWR Opportunities to fish tidal rivers are plentiful along the western shore of the Chesapeake from the Potomac in Northern Virginia down to the James River and everything in between. These large tidal tributaries follow a salinity gradient where freshwater at the fall line turns brackish, with higher salinity concentrations the closer one travels down river to the confluence … [Read more...]
Colder Can Be Better
Often colder water heats up freshwater fishing, especially at Lake Anna, when the big bass bite begins as the water temperature goes south of 50. The striper bite is better, as well. Jerkbaits, spoons and vibrating baits are productive when it gets chilly. Crappie are biting as well, but they are deep, clinging to bridges and deep structure. The lower ends of Lake Gaston and Buggs Island … [Read more...]
Merry Christmas From Cvilli Buzz
A Beckley Christmas
I had just turned 10 and would spend this Christmas in our new house on Jennings Street in Beckley, WV. I had made a Little League team that year, loved my Fourth-Grade teacher and Freddie Arnold had just moved in just down the street. I now had a built-in baseball, football, and basketball buddy. Life was good. As Christmas approached, there was one thing I really wanted – an English bike. … [Read more...]
A Winter Wander-land at Boar’s Head
Each year, the Brewer’s, the Branch’s, and the Craig’s get together at Christmastime. We chose the Boar’s Head this year where we dined in the Mill Room (The NY Strip was exceptional) and then enjoyed the Winter Wander-land and all the Christmas Lights and decorations. This was my first visit to the display, and it was well worth the $20 to attend. The brightly lit holiday trail is … [Read more...]
Remembering the Old Christmas Specials
One thing I dearly miss from our Boomer years is a December full of great Christmas specials on TV. This was entertainment at its finest – top stars, top acts, great music, great comedy, and classic cartoons. In the 1950’s and 60’s, variety shows dominated the airwaves. Singers with top hits appeared regularly and comedians like Bob Newhart and Jonathan Winters left us in stitches … [Read more...]
Skillet Fried Potatoes
When I was a boy, we had either potatoes or rice with every meal. A starch was a requirement. Many times, we had Fried Potatoes and always cooked in an iron skillet Today, Nancy and I have potatoes with many meals, though sometimes we will have pasta as a starch and rice from time to time. Baked potatoes are a staple, and we fix French Fries with burgers and dogs. We have scalloped potatoes and … [Read more...]
