Mostly, we’ve avoided a brutal winter, but there have been a few frosty mornings with ice clinging to the windshield at 8:30 am. That means turning the car on early and get out the ice scraper - unless you have a can of Johnsen’s De-Icer handy. This stuff is amazing. Nancy bought a can early this winter and uses it every frosty morning. You just spray the windshield, and the frost disappears. … [Read more...]
Holly: The Holy Grail for Wildlife
By Stephen Living Looking out my office window, I could see a flurry of activity around one the holly trees in my back yard. A steady flow of birds flew in and out of the tree and hopped amongst the branches plucking berries. I wandered outside to stretch my legs and enjoy the show. My tree is an American holly. The leathery evergreen leaves are broadly toothed and spiny, and this one … [Read more...]
‘Gator Trout
On the OBX, fishing has not slowed with the late winter weather. Lawrence Benner can vouch for that as he weighed in a 29-inch plus speckled trout that tipped the TW’s Tackle scales at 7.12 pounds. Wow! Striper s and drum continue to bite in the Carolina sounds. Offshore, lots of giant bluefins are being caught and released, along with yellowfins, and blackfins. Virginia March … [Read more...]
Smell Like a Man
It was television that triggered the explosion in sales of men’s fragrances. Before TV, there were a handful of scents on the market – Mennen, Pinaud Clubman, Williams After Shave and a couple of others. But in the late 50s and 60s people – especially men people – would buy most anything that was advertised. And we Boomers bought a pile of fragrances. Let’s go back and see. Old Spice had been … [Read more...]
Doughtie’s: The Real Deal BBQ
It was nearly lunchtime, and I wanted a BBQ. I was also in Kroger’s and knew exactly what to do. I went back to the prepared foods section and crossed my fingers, hoping to find some Doughtie’s BBQ. It was there and within the hour I was eating BBQ you would normally only find in Eastern North Carolina. Doughtie’s is whole-hog BBQ with a little smokiness mixed in with the pork, vinegar, and … [Read more...]
Lenten Roses for Early Blooms
Our first jonquils are just beginning to pop up, but our Lenten Roses are in full bloom Snow, sleet, frost, cold - it doesn’t matter to these hardy plants. They are the Energize Bunnies of all our flowers. They are early bloomers, they are beautiful, they flourish in shady areas, and they have earned their rightful place as the most important flowers in our yard. Though the blooms resemble … [Read more...]
Cajun Fried Tiger Shrimp
I had a bag of Cajun Shrimp Fry Breading that I was itching to use. I love Fried Shrimp, which I ordinarily only get at restaurants, but now was my time to shine. I went to Aldi’s to check out their frozen shrimp supply and found a 1-pound bag of Tiger Shrimp for about $11 and snatched it up. Tiger Shrimp have – by far – the best flavor of all the shrimps. They make for great Shrimp Cocktails and … [Read more...]

Birds: Count ‘em
I saw a perfectly awful movie on Netflix last week – “The Big Year”, with Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black and I watched the whole thing, which felt like two weeks. Why? Because it was a movie about 3 guys competing to see who could spot and identify the most birds in one year – The Big Year. The winner spotted over 750 species of birds. I found that interesting and it got me to wondering … [Read more...]
The “Buck” Stops Here
Finally! A bill out of Richmond that makes sense. Del. Tony Wilt out of Rockingham, authored a bill that allows people to pick up dead deer, bears, elk or turkeys that have been hit by vehicles. They call it the “roadkill bill” and it was passed by a vote of 99-0. Now, if someone hits a deer that likely puts a dent in their car - or worse – they are allowed to pick the animal up, take it home … [Read more...]
