We called them mitts, not gloves. But they were among our prized possessions - baseball gloves. I had a toy glove until I was 10. It was a cheap piece of synthetic with not enough padding to slow down a ping pong ball. When I tried out for Little League, and I needed a real glove. Daddy took me to a local hardware/sporting goods shop, and I found one that fit. It was signed by Chico Carresquel, … [Read more...]
Outer Banks Driftwood
If you can’t go to the Outer Banks, bring the Outer Banks to you. That’s what we did a few years back. After a great four-day getaway, we stopped by Outer Banks Driftwood in Kill Devil Hills on our way back home and bought three pieces of beautiful driftwood. One is now overlooking our goldfish pond. It’s a classic cypress stump that washed up on shores of the Outer Banks, no telling how many … [Read more...]
Gone Fishing with a Green Heron
My daughter, Angelin, and I went fishing early this week at a friend’s lake. The fish were not very cooperative, but still, a bad day’s fishing beats a good day of most anything else. I pulled up a chair at the lake’s edge, lit up a cigar and cast out a Berkley Power Bait Minnow in hopes of a bite. Angelin was in a paddle boat, trolling a lure, then pointed to the bank and said, “Daddy, … [Read more...]
Vocelli’s Pepperoni Rolls
We were at the West Virginia State Fair early this week and ate our way through the sprawling Fairgrounds, noshing on goodies such as genuine 4-H Country Ham Sandwiches, hot and just-cooked Ben Ellen Doughnuts, Pizza Slices, Corn Dogs, Deep-Fried Oreos (yes, Fried Oreos), thick, creamy Milkshakes, and other certified, artery-clogging Fair foods. As we left, we passed by a stand advertising … [Read more...]
Pick ‘em Before They Are Ripe
Nancy sat in on a Tomato Growing Seminar this spring given by Master Gardener Mark Levisay, and in her notes of “tomato tips” were these instructions: “Pick tomatoes before they are ripe, not when they are ripe.” This summer, that has been my plan. It’s August in Virginia and anyone with tomato vines is picking fruit. Yes, tomatoes are fruits, not vegetables. But here’s why you should pick … [Read more...]
Brent’s Chicken in Lemon Sauce
My favorite son-in-law, Brent Ham, cooked dinner for us last week and it was really good. So good that I asked for the recipe and pretty much followed it, which is highly unusual for me. I call it Brent’s Chicken in Lemon Sauce. If you try this, it will become a regular entrée in your home menu arsenal. The recipe calls for 2 (adjust the recipe amount proportionately for 4 or 8) chicken breast … [Read more...]
Shrimp’s On
Not stoves. On hooks. There is nothing a speckled trout craves more than a live, fresh shrimp. Dangle one in the creeks feeding the Chesapeake Bay, and if there is a trout around, he’ll eat it. Trout fishing is picking up as the infusion of freshwater from rains subside, and a surge in salty water has them on the move. If you can’t net or buy fresh shrimp, topwater lures and popping corks … [Read more...]
A Certified Pyromaniac
We have a new Fire Pit. My old one literally fell apart. The top fell off from a combination of rust and out-of-control blazes. I haven’t fired the new one up yet. Too hot. But September will soon bring cool weather and I am ready to start some fires. I come from a long line of pyromaniacs. One of my earliest ancestors, Grog Brewer, was a Southern Neanderthal. It is written on some cave walls … [Read more...]
BBQ in Hot Dog Buns
I just discovered something that will change the way I eat BBQ, and I eat a lot of BBQ. I had some pulled pork in the fridge, but no buns. I thought about putting the pork on some Texas Toast and nixed that idea. But I had just bought some hot dog buns. Why not? It turns out that I truly believe hot dog buns are far better for eating pulled pork BBQ than are traditional hamburger … [Read more...]
Emeril Lagasse French Door Air Fryer
I have sort of tip-toed my way into the world of air fryers. My daughter swore by hers. I saw a small one on sale at Aldi’s for about $30, so I bought it. I found it extremely handy for warming things up – like meat, breads, and fried foods – things that might get “wimpy” in a micro-wave. The little air fryer was quick and efficient and saved having to heat up the entire oven. A couple months … [Read more...]
