Stripers on the Move

May 2, 2024 by Jim Brewer

The striped bass of Buggs Island Lake are now on the move up the Dan and Staunton rivers where they will spawn. The Staunton, in particular, is a great spot to intercept and catch nice fish to 15 pounds and more. Walleye are also available in the same spots. Some huge blue catfish are now biting at Buggs Island. These fish can exceed 100 pounds. Crappie throughout Virginia have largely … [Read more...]

Hey! Back me Up Here!

April 25, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Sportsmen face many obstacles in their outdoor careers. Driving a Jeep down a muddy, rut-filled logging road deep in a grouse covert comes to mind. But that’s not the most difficult challenge. Stepping squarely on a hornet’s nest while creeping in on a spring gobbler is no walk in the park, but worse can happen. An outdoors type might even find himself or herself between a mother bear and her cubs … [Read more...]

A Little Gem of a Salad

April 25, 2024 by Jim Brewer

We were having a tossed salad to go with Grilled Shrimp “On the Barbie” as Outback would say. I originally was going to put the shrimp on the salad, but changed my mind. And instead of making a big bowl of salad, I decided to make individual bowls – one for me (a Papa Bear-sized salad) and one for Nancy (a Mama Bear portion). So, I made an ordinary salad except I used Little Gem Mini-Romaine … [Read more...]

My Catbirds are Back

April 25, 2024 by Jim Brewer

I wondered when they would show up – my Catbirds, that is. Usually, about the time the snowbirds leave (and they did a week ago), the Catbirds arrive. I shouldn’t have worried. While I was sitting on the patio this week enjoying a cocktail, a catbird flew to a limb above me then flitted down to a chair not 6 feet away. This was obviously a returnee who remembered that I often distribute meal worms … [Read more...]

Food and Friends at Lewisburg, WV

April 25, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Should your travels take you through Lewisburg, WV (at the intersection of Rt. 219 and I-64) and if you’re hungry, you are in luck. The friendly little town is full of great restaurants and at the top of the list is Food and Friends at 878 Washington St. (Main St.). The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and an imposing menu. We ate there for lunch, and I was torn what to order. I ended up with … [Read more...]

Whip-poor-will, Whip-poor-will!

April 25, 2024 by Jim Brewer

We stayed in a Air B&B cabin on the Greenbrier River last weekend. It was good to be back in my old stomping grounds of Lewisburg, WV and the river was as beautiful as ever. Funny, but on the way over, Nancy and I thought about Whip-poor-wills and wondered if we would be able to hear one again in these remote backwoods. Did we ever. The little fellow Whip-poor-will-ed his heart out. … [Read more...]

20 Calorie Bars

April 25, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Ran across an amazing product recently, again from Aldi’s. I was poking around in their ice cream section looking for some “lite” bars or popsicles. I saw a box of Fit Active 20 Calorie Bars. 20 calories? That’s like one bite of steak. I figured they would be awful, but if we could enjoy a little something sweet after a meal and only spring for 20 calories, it was worth a try. Plus, … [Read more...]

It’s Game on in Nags Head

April 25, 2024 by Jim Brewer

The water temperatures have hit the 60’s and it’s “Game On” at Nags Head. The sound has been delivering trout to 23-inches and red drum to 30-inches and lots of them, says Capt. Reese Stecher with beachbumfishing.com. “We’re also catching some nice bluefish from 2 to 6 pounds,” Reese said. The past three years have been phenomenal for trout and pups in the Roanoke Sound and this year … [Read more...]

The Boys of Summer

April 18, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Carl Erskine died this week. Most people wouldn’t know who Carl Erskine was. But I did. He was one of the last Boys of Summer – a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers who graced Ebbets Field and pitched masterfully for “Da Bums of Flatbush”. I was about 8 when I became a Dodger fan. They were playing in the 1953 World Series and their shortstop was named Pee Wee Reese. I liked the name for some … [Read more...]
