Pizza Dogs

June 13, 2024 by Jim Brewer

I had an extra pack of hot dogs in the fridge, and we had just had hot dogs on the grill. I didn’t want to press my luck and try to sneak them in the menu again so soon (even though I could eat hot dogs three times a week). So, what do you do with extra hot dogs? Beans and franks, maybe? Not the most appealing entrée for sure. I decided to experiment. I made Pizza Dogs and they were … [Read more...]

Fawns? Leave ‘em Alone

June 13, 2024 by Jim Brewer

An interesting phenomenon is occurring concerning whitetail deer. The does are more and more moving into suburban areas to have their young. They have discovered that the greatest threats to their newborn fawns – coyotes, bobcats, and bears – are less likely to venture into back yards. So that’s where Mama Doe goes to deliver. Back yards - and it is freaking out suburban families. “There’s a … [Read more...]

The Greatest

June 13, 2024 by Jim Brewer

I grew up watching great basketball players. I saw them all – Bob Pettit, Russell, Cousy, Chamberlain, Robertson, Maravich, Kareem, Jordan, Kobe, LeBron James and a host of other fantastic cagers. But in my opinion, Jerry West was the greatest of all time. Mr. West died this week at age 86. I grew up an N.C. State fan. I was born in Raleigh and worshipped the Wolfpack. When our family moved to … [Read more...]

So much so that we just enjoyed one of the highest spring turkey harvests in Virginia history. harvest of 21,988 turkeys during the 2024 spring turkey season, only slightly less than the record harvest of 2023. Ryan Brown, DWR Executive Director, stated “The continued high harvests over the last several years is a great sign … [Read more...]

A Monster Sheepshead

June 13, 2024 by Jim Brewer

On May 30, 2022, Randy Morton was fishing at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel when he landed a 9-pound, 2-ounce sheepshead on 8 lb. test line, it was a potential world record for that class. This year Randy is back with a 13-pound 7 oz Sheepshead pictured above. Monster sheepshead are now being caught routinely at the CBBT and on other bay structures. Riverside: Home of the Original Smash Burger

June 6, 2024 by Jim Brewer

When I moved to Charlottesville in 1967, I asked around about the really important things – where to meet women, where to catch fish, and the best places to eat. I found out on my own the best place to meet women, which was where I worked – Leggett’s Barracks Road. I met a cute little honey there named Nancy and we have been married for over 50 years. As for fishing, my advisors sent … [Read more...]

20,000 Meal Worms

June 6, 2024 by Jim Brewer

(1 of 20,000) I have now ordered 20,000 meal worms from Fluker Farms. I fully expect that amount will last me through the season. My bluebirds have produced two nests and my goal is to supplement the hard-working creatures while they try to feed many hungry beaks. In past years, I have run out of meal worms at the end of the season and have had to buy them from local pet shops, and … [Read more...]

Barbequed Pork Bites

June 6, 2024 by Jim Brewer

I grill a lot. Steaks, burgers, dogs, chicken, shrimp, etc. One thing I had never tried, however, was pork bites. I decided to give them a shot and the dish turned out very well. I bought a pack of pork tenderloins (always 2 in a pack; don’t know why) and I cut one loin into bite size pieces. I marinated them in a BBQ sauce, put the bites on several skewers and grilled them over high heat. They … [Read more...]

More Squirrel Plantings

June 6, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Every year we are surprised by a plant or plants popping up in our yard that we had nothing to do with. Sometimes it’s a stalk of corn, sometimes a sunflower, sometimes a vine of some sort. The mystery plants come from squirrel plantings as the digging devils hide their stash anywhere they can find soft dirt. This year, we have a beautiful plant developing in one of Nancy’s flower beds and … [Read more...]
