Boats out of Oregon Inlet and Pirates Cove are pounding the Mahi on each trip. Also in the mix are yellowfin bluefin and bigeye tunas. A few wahoo have been gaffed and blue marlin and sailfish action is picking up steam. Nearshore and inshore boats are loading up on bluefish, Spanish mackerel, albacore, and sharks. The speckled trout and puppy drum bites are hot in the sound. From the Nags … [Read more...]
A Cure for Unripe Avocadoes
Avocadoes are healthy, or so they say. One study said that if you eat avocadoes every day of your life, there’s a good chance you will rise from the dead after a couple weeks. I don’t eat avocadoes because they are good for you, I eat them because I like them. The big problem with avocadoes is the ripeness factor. If you decide on an avocado salad for dinner that night and go to the store, the … [Read more...]
Baked Yellow Squash Rounds
When yellow squash comes in, it really comes in. Just a couple plants in a small vegetable garden can overwhelm a small household. I really like yellow squash. Fried with onions is my favorite cooking method, followed by squash slices dipped in an egg wash, coated with cornmeal and fried in a skillet. It’s also tasty in a casserole zapped in the microwave with onions or other … [Read more...]

A Bird Buffet
For Father’s Day, I got a Squirrel Stopper Sequoia – a fancy term for a bird buffet. It’s an elegant bird feeder pole that features 4 hanging stations. It’s a sturdy piece of equipment that will hold fairly heavy feeders, bird houses or plants. The lower pole segment has an attached auger that will screw into the ground about 2 feet, making this pole system strong and secure. The middle section … [Read more...]
Ricky Raccoon
It looks like we have a resident raccoon. Well, maybe not a resident, but a frequent visitor. A few weeks ago, Nancy noticed a flattened place in one of her garden beds. The deer are fenced out, so they weren’t the culprits. Maybe a big cat? Then, one day as I was typing in the living room, I saw a raccoon walk right up on the front porch – in the middle of the day. Nancy found another … [Read more...]
Ouch! I’m Hooked!
By Alex McCrickard Have you ever had to end a great fishing trip early due to accidentally hooking yourself? Safety should never be overlooked when spending time on the water fishing. Without a doubt, it’s essential to make sure you are dressing for the weather, checking river flows or lake conditions, keeping an eye on the radar and forecast, wearing a life jacket if you are on a … [Read more...]
A Tarpon Caught from Jennette’s Pier
Veteran angler George Craig of Elizabeth City caught a large tarpon Tuesday morning on Jennette's Pier in Nags Head just after 10 a.m. He fought it for an hour and 13 minutes. In the end, the big fish swam away unharmed. "I'm glad the fish lived, I'm very glad about that," he said. Craig thanked several of his fellow experienced anglers, Jacob Barlow and Taylor Bandy, for all of the effort they … [Read more...]
Packing Heat in Junior High
I saw a couple kids in the neighborhood going at it with squirt guns this week. Boy, did that bring back memories. We had genuine marksmen in Lewisburg Junior High in 1956. Sharpshooters, you might say. As I would quickly discover, if you didn’t pack heat in self-defense, you would get squirted. Squirt guns, you see, were the weapons of choice among the young people in the mid-50s. … [Read more...]
Non-Stick Stainless Pans?
One of my kids gave me a very nice and a very expensive stainless-steel pan one year. I ended up donating it to Good Will. Everything I put in it stuck like Brer Rabbit to the Tar Baby. However, I just read an article that makes me wish I had kept the pan. The Well-Equipped Cook’s website says there is a sure fire way to make stainless stickless. Here’s what they say. Put the pan on the … [Read more...]
