Nothing hits the spot like a warm muffin and a cold glass of milk, particularly when fall arrives and ice clings to your windshield. Muffins are generally healthy; they taste great and they’re not all that hard to make. One of my go-to recipes is this one for Apple Sauce Muffins. I made a batch this week. Yumm! Heat the oven to 375 and spray a muffin tin with a little Pam. I then take a … [Read more...]
Old Businesses of Charlottesville
Great Clothiers Now Gone I saw that Eljo’s is either going to soon sell out or close its doors, marking the end of a string of fantastic clothiers in Charlottesville. When I moved to Charlottesville in 1967 to take the reins of the Men’s Department at Leggett Barrack’s Road, the competition was fierce. Three doors down was Ed Michtom’s, who sold the finest brands available and had … [Read more...]
Eating In
We did a lot of “Eating Out” last weekend on our Deltaville getaway. We supped at The Galley and The Front Porch and visited the Deltaville Raw Bar and Grill for drinks, but the best dining experience came when we ate in. Wanting to enjoy our last evening and not have to worry about the 20 mile or so drive into town and back, we stopped at J & W’s Seafood during our mid-day trip to … [Read more...]
Free Kid’s Fishing Day
Hey, if you know where you can find some kids, I know a place to take them fishing. Lake Orange is having a Youth Fishing Day this Saturday from noon till 4 pm, enough time for them to get wet and muddy and maybe even catch a fish or two. Crappie and bluegills are near the shore now and a meal worm or a bit of earthworm on a small hook will trigger a bite. A chunk of chicken liver will entice a … [Read more...]
Trout Candy
Live shrimp are plentiful now along the Virginia Coast. Every fish that swims will eat a shrimp, but speckled trout love them. Fishermen call the live shrimp “Trout Candy.” As water temps cool, trout and puppy drum are moving well into the creeks and marshes – looking for shrimp. After the high winds and storms passed early this week, fishing picked right up. Some impressive flounder are … [Read more...]
Past Businesses of Charlottesville
Ken Johnson’s Cafeteria So many great businesses have come and gone since I first moved to Charlottesville in 1967. One of the first businesses I encountered was the Ken Johnson’s Cafeteria in the Barrack’s Road Shopping Center. I ate many meals there and I was always impressed with the quality of the food and their reasonable prices. Cafeterias are not usually known for their … [Read more...]
A White Sparrow
About once a year, I’ll see an albino or a leucistic bird in my yard. Last week, I saw a white sparrow. At least I’m pretty sure he was a sparrow because he was flying with a small flock of other sparrows. The flock of 7 or 8 flew to the fence at my garden, then something spooked them, and they flew off to the back hedge. I thought that maybe since they had found food and water, they’d stay a … [Read more...]
Decent ‘Maters
My garden did okay this year. Several weeks of 90 degree-plus weather and no rain sure slowed things down, but overall, my tomatoes were decent. If a back yard gardener can only get a few good tomatoes, all is not lost. Last year, my tomatoes were almost perfect, only 1 or 2 had end rot. I had a bumper crop, but I didn’t particularly care for the tomatoes. The skins were tough, and the inside … [Read more...]
Guns of My Life
A 410 Single Barrel Shotgun The week after Daddy took me squirrel hunting with my newly gifted 12-gauge single barrel shotgun that kicked like a mule on steroids, I set out on my own one afternoon when school let out. I put a handful of 12-gauge, hi-power shells in my pocket and walked to the nearest patch of woods. Suddenlly, I saw a squirrel, and my pulse raced, and my arms … [Read more...]
Pimento Cheese with “Soul”
It’s funny how tastes remain with you for long periods of time. It seems like just last week that I was on a church picnic at Beaver Creek Lake just outside Beckley, WV. I was 9 or 10. Boy, what a spread those Beckley Presbyterian Church ladies set before us. Fried chicken, ham biscuits, yeast rolls, homemade pies and cakes, but the one thing I remember to this day were the pimento cheese … [Read more...]
