Along about February and early March, the Gardening Bug bites me. Since it’s too early to plant most stuff outdoors, I typically start a few plants indoors from seed. No more. I started cucumber and squash plants indoors this spring and they bombed. Nothing, Nanda, Zilch. The problem with starting young plants indoors is the timing. Often, the plants emerge before they’re ready to be … [Read more...]
World’s Easiest Strawberry Pie
When I thumb through recipes, I look first for “easy”. If it’s hard and complicated, I let somebody else cook it. It doesn’t have to be hard to put together to be good to eat. For example. I decided I wanted a Strawberry Pie, so I whipped up the easiest strawberry pie in the world. Here’s how. I happened to have a cup and a half of sliced strawberries on hand, and I put them to good … [Read more...]
Signs of Our Times
Task Lighting is the Task at Hand
By Nancy B During Covid 19 our homes were transformed into more multi-functional spaces. Many started working from home for the first time and many still do. In the past, task lighting was desk lamps, table lamps, under-cabinet lighting and pendants. But these simple lighting products have undergone significant transformations to meet the evolving needs of homes and … [Read more...]
ETC Vintage – A Really Cool Store
When we can, Nancy and I like to slip down to the Gloucester/Deltaville area for short vacations. We have found a really cool little Thrift Shop in the Cobbs Creek area that we make it a point to stop by and visit. I usually try to avoid going to these types of stores, but this one is different. They have a huge selection of most interesting clothing, gifts, home accessories, furniture, … [Read more...]
Mixed Results at Mockingbird Restaurant
We tried a new Charlottesville restaurant last weekend – Mockingbird in Belmont, specializing in Southern Cuisine. I would give them 4 stars on some dishes and no stars on others. For an appetizer we ordered a Strip of Pork Belly on a Bed of Greens. It was fantastic. The pork was crispy fried, and the sauce and greens were outstanding. Also, for an appetizer, I ordered Fried Okra which was not … [Read more...]
Lovely and Versatile Conefllowers
Nancy has done some amazing work landscaping our yard. About all I do is mow the grass and sit back and enjoy the lovely flowers and plants, so I take no credit. One of my favorite parts of the yard, though, is a little wildflower patch around our bird bath. There was once ivy there, that took over everything, but Nancy pulled it all up and planted a little patch of perennials that includes … [Read more...]
Mahi, Mahi Everywhere.
Boats out of Oregon Inlet and Pirates Cove are pounding the Mahi on each trip. Also in the mix are yellowfin bluefin and bigeye tunas. A few wahoo have been gaffed and blue marlin and sailfish action is picking up steam. Nearshore and inshore boats are loading up on bluefish, Spanish mackerel, albacore, and sharks. The speckled trout and puppy drum bites are hot in the sound. From the Nags … [Read more...]
A Cure for Unripe Avocadoes
Avocadoes are healthy, or so they say. One study said that if you eat avocadoes every day of your life, there’s a good chance you will rise from the dead after a couple weeks. I don’t eat avocadoes because they are good for you, I eat them because I like them. The big problem with avocadoes is the ripeness factor. If you decide on an avocado salad for dinner that night and go to the store, the … [Read more...]
Baked Yellow Squash Rounds
When yellow squash comes in, it really comes in. Just a couple plants in a small vegetable garden can overwhelm a small household. I really like yellow squash. Fried with onions is my favorite cooking method, followed by squash slices dipped in an egg wash, coated with cornmeal and fried in a skillet. It’s also tasty in a casserole zapped in the microwave with onions or other … [Read more...]
