Turn The Radio On

May 7, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Many Boomers lived in an era call BT. Before television. In the late 40’s and early 50’s, there were only a handful of TVs in the entire United States. I think the White House had one, and maybe Clark Gable, and that was about it. My family had a Philco radio. It was the center of our family and social life. We kept the radio in the kitchen so Mom could listen while she was fixing meals … [Read more...]

Fishy Business

May 7, 2015 by Jim Brewer

For 34 years, Dr. Dick Whitehill paid the rent with his scalpel. He was a noted orthopedic surgeon for the University of Virginia Hospital. But for the past three years, since retirement, the doctor changed uniforms. Instead of scrubs, he now has a Penn baseball cap, a pair of well-worn jeans, and he fishes for a living. Capt. Dick Whitehill is a charter boat captain based in Topping, VA … [Read more...]

The Varsity: What’ll Ya Have?

May 7, 2015 by Jim Brewer

My wife, Nancy, and I took a little road trip last weekend. A 500-mile road trip – each way. We went to Atlanta for our grandson’s confirmation. We stayed at a nice hotel in downtown Atlanta – the Crown Plaza. From our 4th floor balcony we happened to overlook one of my favorite restaurants in the whole, wide world – The Varsity. The Varsity is an Atlanta institution. Located across … [Read more...]

Big Fish Time!

May 7, 2015 by Jim Brewer

This is the week the fish and the anglers have been waiting for! Spawning fish are shallow and coming up in waves. Fish can be caught in pre-spawn and full-spawn this week. The full moon, water temps steady in the 60s, and blossoming azaleas have encouraged nature to take its course. Great week ahead, with daytime highs in the low to mid 80s and overnight lows around 60. Chance of … [Read more...]

Local Rivers Clearing

April 30, 2015 by Jim Brewer

So far this year, the James, Shenandoah and much of the New River have been simply unfishable. If it hasn’t been dumping 2-inches of rain in a day, it has been blowing hard, creating difficult conditions. The coming weekend (barring unexpected downpours) will likely offer the best fishing of the year. It’s the first of May, the smallmouth are ready to spawn and they are hungry. The … [Read more...]

Gene Shifflett of Professional Optical Service, Inc. has been a professional optician for over 50 years. Gene and his daughter, Debbie, operate the popular eyewear store in Seminole Square. They have built their business on one basic premise – outstanding customer service. “We stand behind our products and our service,” Gene remarked. “We feel the very least we can … [Read more...]

How to Slice a Golf Ball

April 30, 2015 by Jim Brewer

I hate to brag, but I have developed the act of slicing a golf ball into an art form. For the uninformed, a “slice” is when a golf ball is struck solidly, but rather than continue through the air in a straight path towards the hole, the ball goes the required 50 yards, then bears hard to the right seeking the trees, tall grass, sand bunkers, water or any other obstacle along that side of … [Read more...]

To Watch a Mockingbird

April 30, 2015 by Jim Brewer

One of my favorite movies of all time is “To Kill A Mockingbird” based on the novel by Harper Lee. In the movie, Atticus Finch (played by Gregory Peck) tells his son, Jim, that no one should ever kill a mockingbird because they do no harm to any one. Well, there is a certain robin outside the window of my office that might disagree. There is a pair of mockingbirds nesting in an evergreen … [Read more...]

Goose Parmesan

April 30, 2015 by Jim Brewer

I am a hunter, and I have always believed that if you kill a bird or an animal, you should eat it. Most of the game I have harvested through the years has been delicious – birds such as quail, pheasant, ducks, grouse and doves are delightful; likewise, venison, rabbits, squirrels and bear. Geese, though, are not among my favorites, yet I really enjoy a spirited goose hunt. Some of my … [Read more...]

The Ice Cream Man

April 30, 2015 by Jim Brewer

It took about three weeks for the euphoria of getting out of school for the summer to fade away. By that time, Boomer kids had seen all they wanted of their friends, and had done about everything there was to do.  The youngsters had played enough Monopoly games to qualify as miniature real estate tycoons. The Hide and Seek adventures every night were fun, but the “hiders” soon ran out of … [Read more...]
