Grilled Marinated Ham Steaks

July 16, 2015 by Jim Brewer

As a cook, it’s easy to get into a rut. You find a few staples you enjoy and then it’s steak, pork chops, chicken and fish; steak, pork chops, chicken and fish. At the market, I was looking for a change of pace and thought about ham. But when there are only two to cook for, ham is not a meal, it’s a commitment. It’s almost like “till death do us part.” Even if you eat ham for a main course and … [Read more...]

A Road Trip to Yoder’s

July 16, 2015 by Jim Brewer

If you’re on a diet, this is a road trip you may not want to take. That’s because Yoder’s Country Market in Madison has the most incredible homemade pies, cakes and goodies you’d ever want to put in your mouth. But they also have lots of healthy foods, and gifts as well. Yoder’s recently moved to a larger, more convenient location at 2105 S. Seminole Trail in Madison, Setting the store apart … [Read more...]

Have You Lost Your Marbles?

July 16, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Yes, Mom, I did. Jimmy Ray Smith used a steely and wiped me out. But I just bought a whole bag of marbles two days ago. I know, Mom. Can you buy me another bag, and a big steely to go with it? Next time, I’ll win all the marbles. Many Boomers will recognize the above conversation because there was once a childhood sport called marbles that was as popular as football, baseball or … [Read more...]

Create A Mini Meadow

July 16, 2015 by Jim Brewer

When is the last time you saw a meadow? Not a field of fescue, but a meadow with wild flowers and natural, warm season grasses? The kind of place that a butterfly would call home? There aren’t many around, you know, so my wife Nancy and I decided to make a meadow in our own back yard. It’s a mini meadow, really. Not very big, but it is a meadow of sorts with wild flowers of several varieties. The … [Read more...]

A Trip to The Royal Virginian

July 16, 2015 by Jim Brewer

When you’re too poor or too cheap to belong to a country club or to have an annual membership to a golf course, you play around a lot. Such is the case with my regular golf amigos. We play around and have lots of great choices in central Virginia. Last week, we added another venue to our tour – the Royal Virginian at Hadensville in Louisa County. It’s about 35 miles from Charlottesville as the … [Read more...]

Hatteras Wahoo

July 9, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Hatteras Offshore Capt. Dave Wilson on Godspeed Charters had this report: On July 8, we didn't have a ton of bites but they were all quality! I wound up fishing south of the fleet and around some beautiful conditions, just not a lot of action. Still everybody on the boat caught a quality fish including three gaffer dolphin, two wahoos and a sailfish. July 7 was another beautiful day … [Read more...]

The Catfish connection

July 9, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Freshwater fishing is up and down throughout Virginia with one exception – catfish. The whiskered bottom feeders are hitting cut bait, chicken livers and home concoctions across the sate. One hotspot has been, and continues to be, Lake Orange, Darryl Kennedy at Angler’s Landing Marina at Lake Orange reports that the catfish action has been excellent all week following the Fourth of July. … [Read more...]

In The Music Business With Jimmy O

July 9, 2015 by Jim Brewer

We first met Jimmy O in 1983. He was playing at Millers in downtown Charlottesville. This was before it was a downtown mall. It was just a bunch of streets and a downtown. My wife Nancy and I along another couple were enjoying the food and ambience at Millers while watching N.C. State play Hakeem Olajuwon and the highly touted Houston Cougars in the NCAA basketball championship game. As much as we … [Read more...]

Growing Happy Cukes

July 9, 2015 by Jim Brewer

I grew cucumbers last year in my small vegetable garden. They did okay, we had enough to can, but my cukes weren’t happy cukes. That’s because I forced the little fellows up on trellises and lattice work. I thought they’d be happier if they climbed and went up. Turns out, my cukes don’t like to climb. They like to spread. This summer I have a special cucumber patch and the vines are doing … [Read more...]

Retreat To Rose River Farms

July 9, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Sometimes it’s nice just to get away. No cell phones, no office calls, no household chores – just get away. It’s even better if your get-away spot is not too far. That makes travel to and from a snap, with no long distance driving. And I suppose the ideal get-away place would have some decent fishing as well. If all this sounds good, boy do I have a place for you. It’s Rose River Farm on the … [Read more...]
