On the Road for Snakeheads

May 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

A scary looking fish called a snakehead showed up in the Potomac River watershed about 10 years ago. They began biting hooks and lines and made numerous appearances in fish surveys. With all the negative publicity and hand-wringing by various game biologists, one would have though the Martians had landed and were eating our babies. Snakeheads, they said, were prolific breeders and would compete … [Read more...]

Cook It All On The Grill

May 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

My old gas grill died last week. At the end, it had fewer jets working than the candles on a toddler’s birthday cake. After a brief ceremony – recalling some really great outdoor meals and a few I’d rather not mention -– the grill was laid to rest. We like to think it’s in a better place – without bird droppings. I am now the proud owner of a new gas grill with 4 burners – and they all work. It … [Read more...]

Paperboy: A Boomer’s First Job

May 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Paperboy: A Boomer’s First Job   For many young Boomer males, becoming a “paper boy” was the first real job. There may have been a few “paper girls” out there, but not many. Today, automobiles – particularly those with 4-wheel drive – are the principal means of newspaper distribution. But in the years following the war and all the way through the 60’s and 70’s, paper boys on … [Read more...]

Keeping the Deer at Bay

May 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Keeping The Deer At Bay   No deer allowed! Don’t we wish that’s all that was necessary, to put up a sign in our yards and gardens instructing the deer to stay out? Unfortunately, deer can’t read, but they sure can eat. Our flowers, vegetables and shrubs can attest to that fact. So what –if anything – can we do to assure a few fresh flowers and vegetables each spring? Personally, I … [Read more...]

Getting Out of Rough Places

May 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Getting Out of “Rough” Places   In heaven, when you hit a golf ball, it will land on Cavalier Zoysia, every time. It will be just like the fairways at Stoney Creek’s famous Tuckahoe course. In golf heaven, the lie in the fairway will always be perfect, sitting up on top of the grass, ready to be crushed with an iron or a wood. And in golf heaven, every swing will be perfect. Down … [Read more...]

The Cobia are Here!

May 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Dr. Julie Ball says cobia hunters in North Carolina are still reporting excellent catches this week as they intercept schools of fish heading north. But this week, both sightings of schools of cobia as well-boated fish confirm their arrival in local waters off Virginia. This trend will only improve over the next months. Although the bite is not as crazy as it was a week ago, the drum bite … [Read more...]

Croakers Mean Business

May 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Capt. Dick Whitehill of Miss Karen’s Fishing says his clients were catching croakers non-stop at Toll’s Point this week. About half the croakers were keepers. Some decent size spot were also biting. Everything caught was on bloodworms. Capt. Whitehill is also catching lots of rockfish (that season is now in) but they are running small. He’s catching them by casting into shallow water. The … [Read more...]

Fishy Business

May 21, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Capt. Dick Whitehill of Miss Karen’s Fishing says the croaker bite is on and nice croakers at that! Last year, the “hard heads” were plentiful, but on the smallish side. Looks like the big boys have returned in force to the Rappahannock River and they are hungry. Capt. Whitehill is also catching lots of rockfish (that season is now in) but they are running small. He’s catching them by casting … [Read more...]

Mom, Can I Lick the Beater?

May 21, 2015 by Jim Brewer

There was no such thing as fast food in the 1950’s. There were a few drive-ins, but they were anything but fast. And drive-ins were a last resort for the families of the 1950’s and early 60’s. They were pricey and folks back then didn’t have a lot of extra cash to spend. Most families ate at home every night, and for Boomers looking back at some of those great meals, who could ever … [Read more...]
