If there is anything better than a freshly caught catfish, I’m not sure I have ever come across it. By catfish, I mean pan size channel catfish ranging from 1 to 5 pounds. Anything smaller is not worth fiddling with. Anything larger may be on the fatty side and not as appetizing. Last week, my family spent a few days at High Rock Lake in Denton, NC, a good spot for catfish. Last summer, while … [Read more...]
Doug’s Maytag Home Appliance Center
When my good friend, Ron Martin, was alive, if we needed to replace an appliance we’d call him and say, “Ron, our dishwasher just died. When can you get us another one?” Odds are, it was the next day. His technicians delivered the new one, took the old one away and left a bill on our kitchen counter. We trusted Ron’s expertise and opinion so much that we often left it up to him to pick the … [Read more...]
Dolphin, Dolphin and More Dolphin
It was that kind of day on Wednesday of this week for Capt. Dave Wilson aboard the Godspeed Charters in Hatteras. Reports Capt. Wilson: Once we negotiated the shallow channel and breaking bar, things were great offshore! Today we had great dolphin fishing. Our guys caught all they needed in just a few stops. We had hoped for a sailfish or a wahoo as well but never found one. On August 1, it was … [Read more...]
James River Flatheads
A local angler, Tim Walts of Crozet, could care less if the smallmouth are taking Zoom Flukes on the James. That’s because Tim is looking for something a little bigger, like 6 or 8 times bigger than a citation smallmouth. Tim is after catfish, big flathead catfish, and this past week he caught such a specimen. Says Tim: “I was lucky enough to land this 43” monster last weekend on the James … [Read more...]
A Sunday Drive
A typical Sunday for a Boomer child in the mid 50’s went something like this. “Wake up, get dressed. Eat your breakfast or we’ll be late for church.” No mention of baths or showers because we did all that on Saturday night. After eggs, bacon, toast and jam, we were off to church. Sunday school first, then church. Sometimes we lucked out and just went to Sunday school and were back home by … [Read more...]
Crepe Myrtle: A Good Neighbor
Crepe myrtle was first brought to the United States in 1790 and planted in the warm climate and sandy soil of South Carolina. A native to the Southeast Asia, the crepe myrtle took to the South like grits and country ham. It has since flourished and brought pleasure and beauty to millions of homeowners. Crepe myrtle doesn’t really know if it’s a tree or a bush and no one knows for sure the … [Read more...]
The Capes Hotel at Virginia Beach
Last week, we found ourselves in Virginia Beach for a short getaway. We had planned to stay someplace in Norfolk since a visit to Norfolk Botanical Gardens was at the top of our agenda. But we had actually dared to drive to the beach without reservations. It was a Sunday, so how busy could they be down there? Plenty busy, it turns out. Many hotels were booked and the ones that weren’t seemed to be … [Read more...]
James River Runners
The biggest smallmouth I ever caught was on a float tube trip near Hatton Ferry. I don’t now how big she was since I released her and I had no scales with me to weigh the hefty fish. But she was big enough to pull my float tube all over the river. It took quite a while to bring that big bass to net. It just so happens that now is an excellent time to float the James River and James River … [Read more...]
Buffalo Chicken Things
I considered myself a Frugal Chef. My wife says I’m just cheap. Nonetheless, I don’t like to overpay when it comes to grocery shopping. I like value for my dollar. Which brings me to chicken wings. I enjoy chicken wings. Sometimes, on a Sunday night, it’s nice to grill or bake a bunch of wings, lace them in hot sauce and wash them down with a cold brewski. But chicken wings are expensive when you … [Read more...]
Heritage Oaks in Harrisonburg
One of the fun parts about golf is visiting new courses. On a new course, everyday is Opening Day and there is always hope that the slice in your driver will magically disappear, your short game will come together and you knees will no longer knock when staring down a 5-foot putt. So it was with great eagerness that I accepted a friend’s suggestion to try the Heritage Oaks Golf Course in … [Read more...]
