This spring, several weeks after my small vegetable garden had been tilled, I noticed a number of volunteer tomatoes springing up. I had intended to buy four new tomato plants. When conditions are right, four plants will produce a lot of tomatoes, but I hated to pull the hardy little plants up. I decided to leave 5 of the strongest vines and see what developed. What developed is that every single … [Read more...]
Jimmy O and Barbeque
What better “Road Trip” could there be than one with super good music and super good barbeque – all at the same time. There is such a Road Trip, and a convenient one to those in Central Virginia. How about a Wednesday evening visit to the Lazy Parrot Grill in Charlottesville, where the chefs stoke the hardwood in their big barbeque grill for some great ‘cue. And entertaining guests as they order … [Read more...]
Faces By Kathryn
Many salons price their facial appointments by the clock - maybe 30 minutes, maybe 45, maybe an hour. Kathryn Yates at Faces by Kathryn is less interested in what time it is than how her clients look. “I give my clients a full hour,” she said. “Everyone deserves to benefit from a quality facial.” And whereas many salons may charge up to $148 for an hour facial, Kathryn’s fee is … [Read more...]
A Little Dab’ll Do Ya
The power of television in the early days was mind-boggling. No advertisements today – even the mega-popular Super Bowl commercials – can rival the impact of many TV ads in the 1950’s. Case in point? Brylcreem. Until the mid-50’s, most guys wore flat tops, crew cuts, or GI’s as they were sometimes called. It was the result of the lingering influence of World War II and the deep admiration … [Read more...]
Spot Beginning to Bite
By Dr. Ken Neill III The NE blow this weekend may fire things back up once it settles down. Decent numbers of spot were already being caught so we may see that fishery take off. Everything is biting, but except for the spot, it’s just not as good as during the previous few weeks. Flounder fishing slowed around the wrecks and at the CBBT. The great catches of Spanish mackerel along the … [Read more...]
Lake Orange Walleyes
Walleyes are generally considered a cold water species. Many anglers fish for the toothy predators in January and February. But it seems as though the walleyes in Lake Orange like warm water just fine. Despite a lake temperature in the mid-80’s, Lake Orange anglers are catching lots of walleyes, nice fish up to 7 pounds. Darryl Kennedy of Angler’s Landing at Lake Orange says the walleyes have … [Read more...]
Boomers: The Electronically Challenged
Believe it or not, there was once a time when you had to actually get up off the sofa and walk over to the TV and turn it on. After waiting for the tubes to warm and after adjusting the horizontal controls, you could sit down and watch TV – both channels. For Boomers, the Age of Electronics began with the remote control device for the television set. We were in heaven. Then it got worse. … [Read more...]
High Rock Lake
We have now twice vacationed at High Rock Lake in Denton, North Carolina. About 15 miles east of Lexington (the Barbeque Capital of the World), it’s a great spot for a family vacation. There are all the water sports, naturally, and the fishing is good, too. Even in the hot summer, we were able to catch lots of catfish and bluegills. High Rock Lake is like a blue collar version of Smith Mountain … [Read more...]
Doing Cart Wheels
It’s not really about the game of golf. The reason grown men go gaga over a round on the links is the opportunity to drive a golf cart. For me, it all started when I was 6 years old and saw an electric car in the Sears catalog. It was $29.95, a king’s ransom in those days, but I begged Santa Claus to bring me one for Christmas. Christmas came and went and all I got was a red tricycle. Since … [Read more...]
A Cure for Yucky Ponds
My friends, Greg and Leah Leffler, have a small fish pond in their yard. A few years back, they were losing fish due to algae build up and too much, or not enough, chemicals. A friend recommended a better way, an ultra violet light system. Greg installed one and within one day, the scum and algae were gone. Hadios. Vamoose. Gone. Greg says that the ultra violet light will make the water clear … [Read more...]
