If you have a backyard, or some woods and meadows near your home, genuine miracles are happening every day. Birds are nesting, all wildlife is busy raising little ones and the plant world is bursting at the seams. It appears all birds may have nested early this year. Don’t know exactly why, but many turkey hens were on nests sooner than usual. So were grouse. Maybe it was the quick green-up in … [Read more...]

Pasta Made Perfect
When Americans think of pasta, spaghetti with meat sauce and lasagna come to mind. That’s pasta, right? Some sort of noodles smothered in meat, cheese and sauce? That’s not what Italians think of when it comes to pasta. To an Italian, pasta is itself the focal point and the sauce is merely that - a sauce or compliment to the succulent pasta. In Italy, pasta is an entrée, served as an entire … [Read more...]

Kick Back at Topsail
Beaches, beaches, everywhere. There is Virginia Beach with wall-to-wall hotels and Myrtle Beach with wall-to-wall traffic, and more golf courses than seagulls. There is Corolla, Duck, Nags Head, Hatteras and many others. But one of my family’s favorite get away spots is Topsail Beach, on the southern coast of North Carolina. My old friend Bill Herndon of Charlottesville was the first to mention … [Read more...]
It’s Howdy Doody Time
Hey kids! What time is it? Breathes there a Boomer who doesn’t know the answer to that question? If it was Buffalo Bob Smith asking and it was a weekday afternoon on NBC in the 1950’s, it was most definitely “Howdy Doody time.” Boomers remember the Howdy Doody Show as much for the quality of life during those years as for the quality of this popular children’s program. It was a time of peace … [Read more...]

I went on a mini vacation last week. Four days of food and fun, along with multiple adult beverages. I was with my 4 amigos on our semi-annual retreat from reality. When I returned, the bathroom scales added 4 1/2 pounds to my person. It was time to get back to a healthy lifestyle and lose those dreaded pounds, but no crash diet for me. I have found ways to eat like a champ and still lose weight. … [Read more...]
Four Fish Are Better Than None
Ed T. of Front Royal Canoe had this report for the South Fork of the Shenandoah: First trip of the year for me, finally got back on the river. Really nice day weather-wise. Started out a little cool, but turned into a beautiful spring day. The river had come up about ¾-foot and was quite stained. The water temperature had dropped some as well. Chalk all that up to the rains upriver last Tuesday … [Read more...]
