Eastern Shore Tourist Fishing

July 23, 2015 by Jim Brewer

The Ham family – Brent, Angelin, Ben, Brendan and Berkley - spent last week at Cherrystone Campground on the Eastern Shore, doing a little “tourist fishing.” The Greensboro family had lots of fun and caught a bunch of fish. Fishing near Cape Charles in a small boat, the Carolina crew caught flounder, spot, croakers, grey trout, speckled trout, puppy drum, hogfish, whiting, puffer fish, pin fish … [Read more...]

Fishing Heats Up at Nags Head

July 16, 2015 by Jim Brewer

The flounder bite is on at Nags Head where Ben Morris caught an 8.35 citation flatfish while dunking minnows at Oregon Inlet. Pier anglers and surf fishermen also reeled in some nice flounder. Here is TW's report on Nags Head area fishing since Monday of this week. Surf anglers beached sea mullet and blues along with some spot and ever present sharks. A few Spanish mackerel showed up at Duck. … [Read more...]

Stripers at Buggs Island

July 16, 2015 by Jim Brewer

The bass are pouting with the arrival of hot water and the crappie have moved to deep brush in up to 30 feet of water, but the striper fishing now at Buggs Island Lake is on fire. Bobby Whitlow at Bobcat’s in Clarkesville said that recent striper action has been the best of the year, but anglers are having to go deep for their catches. The stripers are being caught at depths of 40 to 50 feet in 80 … [Read more...]

Move Better With Move Better

July 16, 2015 by Jim Brewer

I had a pain in my neck, literally. I had been fishing with Capt. Dick Whitehill and had reeled in numerous stripers on a pleasant day last November. Unfortunately, the fishing rod and reel out I was in charge of had a one-pound, ball sinker at the business end and it was a beast to reel in. After our trip, my neck hurt like the dickens. Later that week, I went to my primary care doctor to make … [Read more...]

Grilled Marinated Ham Steaks

July 16, 2015 by Jim Brewer

As a cook, it’s easy to get into a rut. You find a few staples you enjoy and then it’s steak, pork chops, chicken and fish; steak, pork chops, chicken and fish. At the market, I was looking for a change of pace and thought about ham. But when there are only two to cook for, ham is not a meal, it’s a commitment. It’s almost like “till death do us part.” Even if you eat ham for a main course and … [Read more...]

A Road Trip to Yoder’s

July 16, 2015 by Jim Brewer

If you’re on a diet, this is a road trip you may not want to take. That’s because Yoder’s Country Market in Madison has the most incredible homemade pies, cakes and goodies you’d ever want to put in your mouth. But they also have lots of healthy foods, and gifts as well. Yoder’s recently moved to a larger, more convenient location at 2105 S. Seminole Trail in Madison, Setting the store apart … [Read more...]

Have You Lost Your Marbles?

July 16, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Yes, Mom, I did. Jimmy Ray Smith used a steely and wiped me out. But I just bought a whole bag of marbles two days ago. I know, Mom. Can you buy me another bag, and a big steely to go with it? Next time, I’ll win all the marbles. Many Boomers will recognize the above conversation because there was once a childhood sport called marbles that was as popular as football, baseball or … [Read more...]

Create A Mini Meadow

July 16, 2015 by Jim Brewer

When is the last time you saw a meadow? Not a field of fescue, but a meadow with wild flowers and natural, warm season grasses? The kind of place that a butterfly would call home? There aren’t many around, you know, so my wife Nancy and I decided to make a meadow in our own back yard. It’s a mini meadow, really. Not very big, but it is a meadow of sorts with wild flowers of several varieties. The … [Read more...]

A Trip to The Royal Virginian

July 16, 2015 by Jim Brewer

When you’re too poor or too cheap to belong to a country club or to have an annual membership to a golf course, you play around a lot. Such is the case with my regular golf amigos. We play around and have lots of great choices in central Virginia. Last week, we added another venue to our tour – the Royal Virginian at Hadensville in Louisa County. It’s about 35 miles from Charlottesville as the … [Read more...]

Hatteras Wahoo

July 9, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Hatteras Offshore Capt. Dave Wilson on Godspeed Charters had this report: On July 8, we didn't have a ton of bites but they were all quality! I wound up fishing south of the fleet and around some beautiful conditions, just not a lot of action. Still everybody on the boat caught a quality fish including three gaffer dolphin, two wahoos and a sailfish. July 7 was another beautiful day … [Read more...]
