Toys of My Life

November 7, 2024 by Jim Brewer

A Genuine Radio Flyer One of the greatest toys ever made was a red wagon – a genuine Radio Flyer to be exact. Only one was needed, because they were built to last forever and for kids in the 50’s and 60’s, they were in the must-have category. Radio Flyers were perhaps the most versatile toy of all. You could haul stuff around, naturally, but you could also sit in one, use the handle as a … [Read more...]

November 11th: A Really Special Day

November 7, 2024 by Jim Brewer

There was a time when November 11th was my favorite day of the year. More so than Christmas, more than Thanksgiving, even more than my birthday was November 11th – Veteran’s Day. Veteran’s Day was always a special day for me because my father, James E. Brewer, was a veteran who lost his life in WW II. My stepdad, Daddy George, was also a Veteran, serving in the Pacific with the U.S. … [Read more...]

Awesome Fall Tomatoes

November 7, 2024 by Jim Brewer

I have three tomato plants that are still producing. I went out this morning and plucked about 15 from the vines. Several were near perfect, while the others had a bit of black at the tops. For lunch, I sliced up two of the smaller ones and ate them with a dab of mayonnaise and lots of salt and pepper. They were amazing. Plump, ripe, juicy, and exploding with flavor. I don’t know what it is about … [Read more...]

Old Charlottesville Businesses

November 7, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Barnaby’s Pizza  We eat pizza from time to time. Who doesn’t? For us, it’s usually Voccelli’s, which is just a stone’s throw from our house. But we have the fondest memories of Barnaby’s, a pizzeria once located on Greenbrier Drive at the current site of Guadalajara. Pizza was a relatively new concept in the south in the 1960s. New York and Chicago were well known for pizza pies, an … [Read more...]

Creamy Chicken with Mushroom Sauce

November 7, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Like the cows say in the Chick-fil-A commercials, “Eat more chicken!” Trouble is, eating chicken can get boring, so I am always scrounging around for new and better ways to cook it. Recently I tried the recipe below for Creamy Chicken and Mushroom Sauce and it’s a keeper. Nothing boring about it. It’s yummy. Here’s how I put mine together. Start with chicken, naturally. I like the sliced … [Read more...]

Saved By a Crappie Jig

November 7, 2024 by Jim Brewer

A few years ago, I packed my surf rod, some heavy casting rods and reels, and a tackle box for a getaway to Nags Head and a little saltwater fishing. Unfortunately, I picked up the wrong tackle box. It was my freshwater box with nary a sinker or double drop rig in the whole box. I had to buy new stuff at the Beach. Last weekend, I did even worse. I brought my rods, a crab net and big bucket for … [Read more...]

Chick-fil-A Rules

November 7, 2024 by Jim Brewer

All the other fast-food restaurants spend much of their time chasing after Chick-fil-A, a true innovator in the business and the Closed-On-Sundays chain has done it again with their Honey Pepper Pimento and Chicken Sandwiches. I had seen them advertised on TV, and being a lover of anything with pimento cheese, I had to try them. I did and they were as advertised – delicious. I ordered the mild … [Read more...]

Swords: The Other Billfish

November 7, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Blue marlin, white marlin sailfish – billfish, one and all. But so are swordfish, and unlike their long snouted cousins, they are prized as food fish. Swordfish anglers fish in deep water to attract their quarry and often take overnight trips to reach them. This past week, the “Reelin N Dealin” put a 326-lb. swordfish on the scales and claimed first prize in the Oceans East Swordfish … [Read more...]

Old Charlottesville Businesses: The Caravan

October 30, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Back in the late 60’s, the area along 29 north of the Hydraulic Intersection was largely rural. There was a cattle farm behind what was once K-Mart and hayfields extended north. Then, 29 began to develop. I can recall – the early 70’s as I remember – when the Caravan Restaurant opened beside what was the R.M. Davis car lot. There weren’t that many fast-food joints back then – we didn’t even … [Read more...]

A November World Series?

October 30, 2024 by Jim Brewer

This year, the World Series is likely to extend into November, but for sure through October 30.  It’s almost Halloween and that’s scary. Baseball should be over in early October, but money rules, especially with TV advertising. But who’s watching? The games don’t start until 9 and they often run through midnight. Even most bars close then. I love the Dodgers, but I’ll watch a few innings … [Read more...]
