Sam’s Kitchen

February 13, 2025 by Jim Brewer

Nancy had been up since O-Dark-Thirty getting our daughter to the airport for an early morning flight, and it was nearing breakfast time on a Sunday morning. I usually fix a big breakfast on Sunday mornings, but Nancy suggested we eatout, so we did. We drove up to the Woodbrook Shopping Center and found a table in Sam’s Kitchen and had a breakfast worthy of royalty. Nancy likes … [Read more...]

Consistent Hunting Results

February 13, 2025 by Jim Brewer

Virginia biologists have finished tabulating the hunting results from the 2024/25 season and the results are – well – consistent. The harvest of bears, deer and fall turkeys were all amazingly close to the previous year’s totals. Hunters took 2,702 bears last fall which was a bit lower (6.5%) than the previous year. Reduced access to lands used for bear hunting in the aftermath of Hurricane … [Read more...]

Winter Puppies

February 13, 2025 by Jim Brewer

Apparently, the puppy drum on the Outer Banks are not impressed nor discouraged by cold weather. The pups are biting down at Nags Head. TW’s Tackle says surf anglers and those tossing baits from Jennette’s Pier and catching fish of all sizes. A few speckled trout have also been reported. Offshore, one boat landed a 110-inch bluefin weighing over 900 pounds. That’s a lot of tuna … [Read more...]

A Really Roasted Pig

February 6, 2025 by Jim Brewer

It was the Fourth of July. Why not roast a pig? Never mind that I had never cooked a whole pig before nor did I even have a pig cooker, but I suggested the idea to my friend John Savides, and he agreed. The problem with having friends like John is that they will agree to most anything. “Look. There’s a wild bobcat! Think we can take him on?” “Let’s give it a try,” John would say. “Wanna … [Read more...]

A Little Help?

February 6, 2025 by Jim Brewer

Just like the song goes, “I get by with a little help from my friends”. I could use a little help from my friends. I’d love to increase the readership of my CvilleBuzz, and maybe you folks can help. If everyone who enjoys my weekly ramblings on food, birds, Boomer memories, gardens and other foolishness would send out suggestions to their friends, maybe more people would sign up. It’s really … [Read more...]

No Disappointments at Texas Roadhouse

February 6, 2025 by Jim Brewer

My last two dining out experiences were disappointing. Both the Bonefish and Timberwood Grill trips were not up to stuff. In the middle of a hectic week, Nancy and I decided to visit the Texas Roadhouse – our go to place for last minute dining. We pulled up two stools at the bar, ordered and this time we were not disappointed. Texas Roadhouse, once again, came through with flying colors. Since … [Read more...]

Bio-Tone Starter Plus

February 6, 2025 by Jim Brewer

One of the most unusual Christmas presents I received last year was a big bag of fertilizer. Well, it looked and smelled like fertilizer, but it really wasn’t. It was a bag of Bio-Tone Starter Plus. My kids thought that would it make my garden not only productive, but spectacular. Bio-Tone is a blend of natural and organic ingredients enhanced with things called microbes and … [Read more...]

Jonquils: Up and at ‘Em

February 6, 2025 by Jim Brewer

Jonquils like to get an early start on spring. Give the little guys a few warm days in January and they are up and at ‘em. Our jonquils began popping up last week, just as the last of the ice and snow melted away. They seem to surprise us every year with an early sprout, but come Feb. 1, ready or not, jonquils are coming out of the ground. But not to worry. Snow and cold won’t kill spring … [Read more...]

Salisbury Steak Meatballs

February 6, 2025 by Jim Brewer

Everybody loves meatballs. They are tasty, they’re versatile and they’re economical. What’s not to like? The little fellas are probably best known as appetizers when cooked with grape jelly, but meatballs make for great entrees as well - like these Salisbury Steak Meatballs. I made a batch in the slow cooker last week and they were both easy and delicious. Takes about 5 minutes to put together but … [Read more...]

Fishermen Biding their Time

February 6, 2025 by Jim Brewer

Things are pretty quiet on the fishing scene. Bass are biting at Anna and the trout streams are gushing with water after the snow melt off. Some monster blue cats are tugging on lines in the Hopewell stretch of the James. The heartiest of saltwater fishermen are dropping baits over the wrecks hoping for sea bass and tautog anglers are catching a few when they can find bait. On the OBX, puppy … [Read more...]
