Tuna Time

February 16, 2017 by Jim Brewer

There are Bluefin Tuna out there when the boats can get to them. A 447pound Bluefin was caught out of Pirate’s Cove over the weekend. At Nags Head, nothing is happening in the surf. The water temperature is 46 degrees. Some hardy anglers on Jennette’s Pier were catching all the skates they wanted. One keeper puppy drum was also caught at Jennette’s.   Hatteras Surf Last … [Read more...]

Virginia Cougars?

February 9, 2017 by Jim Brewer

The Virginia Game Department says that cougars, mountain lions, do not exist in Virginia. Period. End of argument. But….. There are at least three hunters in Louisa County who disagree. Sherman Shifflett, a frequent contributor to CvilleBuzz, said that the hunters saw a cougar in the Ware’s X community, not far from Lake Anna. The hunters were using beagles to make a drive near an old … [Read more...]

The First TVs

February 9, 2017 by Jim Brewer

As America by the millions tuned in to last Sunday’s Super Bowl on their flat screen, hi-def., high-res, plasma infused TV sets, it gave this Boomer pause to think back to how it once was with television sets. In the early years after the war, most families didn’t own a TV. It was the early to mid-fifties when sets became affordable enough that middle-income families could buy one. But what … [Read more...]

Farm Pond Action

February 9, 2017 by Jim Brewer

As winter begins its stretch run, the best place for cabin fever-stricken anglers may well be farm ponds. Smaller bodies of water warm more quickly than do their larger counterparts. Plus, a full day’s sun in the shallow end of a farm pond can increase 5 or 6 degrees in a single day. Cold blooded as they are, fish gravitate to warm water, now is a great time to fish for big bass in farm … [Read more...]

Cobia Update

February 9, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Dr. Ken Neill, III   Cobia is closed for 2017. Well, the fishery is closed in federal waters and with a new administration settling in D.C., and we will see if it stays closed. But for now, it is closed for the year. Based on estimated catches greatly exceeding the allowable catch the previous two years, and the assumption that states will keep cobia open in state waters, federal waters … [Read more...]

Donny Osmond Lighting

February 9, 2017 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy Brewer While in Dallas for the Lighting Market earlier this month, I was delighted to have the opportunity to meet Donny Osmond. We all remember Donny and his sister singing their hearts out on the Osmond’s show. Well, now that Donny is all grown up, he is now working in lighting, my field of expertise. The Donny Osmond Home Collection by Capital Lighting … [Read more...]

Cooking With Parchment paper

February 9, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Some cooks are slow learners. Take me, for example. I go through cans of Pam like cotton candy at a carnival, trying to coerce my culinary concoctions to avoid sticking to the pots and pans. Sometimes they stick and sometimes they don’t, but even if cookies – for example- fail to cling to the baking sheet, the Pam residue leaves a sticky mess when it’s time to scrub down the dishes. Recently I … [Read more...]

A Time To Sew

February 9, 2017 by Jim Brewer

As readers of CvilleBuzz well know, I love to fiddle in the backyard with my small vegetable garden. I find it to be almost a spiritual endeavor. To sew a tiny seed, seemingly dead, into the moist earth and watch it come to life, pushing its way through the heavy dirt in search of sunlight is simply amazing to me. Any actual plants or fruits of my gardening labor are incidental. I just love to … [Read more...]

The Perils of First Grade

February 2, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Digging deeply into the memories of childhood, this Boomer shudders at the thought of the early years of school, namely kindergarten and first grade. How I survived remains a mystery. In the 1950’s, there was no pre-kindergarten, in fact, kindergarten was optional. I remember it as a waste of about 5 hours a day. The teacher read silly stories and we spent much of our waking hours (yes, there … [Read more...]

Tautog Action

February 2, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Dr. Ken Neill, III In Virginia saltwater, tautog are the main target. Some nice catches are being made on the coastal wrecks. The water is still warm enough that even the inshore wrecks are still holding a lot of sea bass that you have to weed through to get to the tautog. The coastal striped bass fishery has not developed. There is some catch-and-release action inside of the bay. … [Read more...]
