One of the great pleasures involved in any trip to the beach is eating out. On the Outer Banks, most all the seafood is fresh, caught by local fishermen and nothing beats fresh seafood. Nancy and I have a number of go-to places we eat including Kelly’s, Owen’s, Bass Nights, Darrell’s in Manteo, Fish Head’s, Tale of the Whale and Sugar Creek (formerly RV’s). On our last trip, we … [Read more...]
The Life of a Fiddler Crab
Next time you’re having a particularly rotten day and thinking that life has dealt you a bad hand, consider the fate of a fiddler crab. Last week while I was surf fishing at Nags Head, I looked down at my feet and saw little flicks of sand coming from a small hole. Intrigued, I continued to observe the spectacle underway. Finally, a tiny fiddler crab emerged from the hole and tossed … [Read more...]
Getting There
Folks in Central Virginia have two choices when it comes to driving to the Outer Banks. The shortest, most direct route is I-64 East, then 158 South to the beach. We go this way when traffic isn’t a factor. For example, if you are able to pass through Hampton Roads before 4 PM on a weekday, you’re good to go. If you find yourself at the Hampton Tunnel on a Friday around 5 o’clock, … [Read more...]
Which Beach?
Virginians have basically two choices when it comes to a beach vacation – Virginia Beach or the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Virginia Beach is a hotel-kind-of-place, more commercial and more expensive as a rule. The Outer Banks is a beach cottage-kind-of-place; more laid back, a little warmer weather, prettier beaches and better fishing. For me, it’s a no-brainer. It’s the Outer Banks, more … [Read more...]
World Class Fishing
Nags Head Two species of fish rule the saltwater shallows. Speckled trout and puppy drum. The specks are sleek assassins with a set of dentures designed to destroy their prey. They are the jaguars of the flats, striking without warning. They are silver and black beauties with touches of purple. The puppy drum, the redfish, are Brahman bulls with scales. The have the power of John Deere … [Read more...]
Houston, We Have Frogs
It doesn’t take much to make me happy – a good cigar, an easy golf course, a new Sports Illustrated magazine on a Friday after work or frogs, preferably frogs in our lily pad pond. I find the little amphibians to be fascinating. We have had a series of frogs to come and go in our small, above-ground pond. Some came from tadpoles, which I captured with the help of my grandkids, and some just … [Read more...]
The Perfect Hamburger
I’ve printed this before, but sometimes I have to remind myself just how good a hamburger can taste if you don’t really care how many calories it contains. Such is the case with the Perfect Hamburger. The recipe is fairly simple, only two ingredients – hamburger and Kosher salt. But the type of hamburger is critical. Modern hamburger is trending leaner. They have 96/4 burger, meaning … [Read more...]
Breaking In A Hunting Car
Carlos Santos had been avoiding me. He knew what we had to do, but had been putting it off. My old friend, you see, had a pretty good fender bender with the car of a teenager who thought that texting his girlfriend was more important than looking out the rear view mirror when backing out on a major thoroughfare. Crunch! My friend now has a nervous tic in his right eye due to … [Read more...]
Golf Retreat at Cliff View
Golf can be expensive. Not counting the $4 balls that go sailing into the high grass and the $500 drivers that are sure to get you an extra 10 yards off the tee, there are the fees to play the courses, which can exceed $200 a round. But golf doesn’t have to be expensive, and a golfing retreat for friends, businesses or organizations can be productive, inexpensive and fun – at Cliff View Golf … [Read more...]
