ASMFC: Playing Favorites

February 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Division! Sounds nice, doesn’t it? These people surely work tirelessly to ensure the preservation of the saltwater fishery along the Atlantic Coast while making sure everyone involved is treated equally. Or maybe not? Last week we printed a response to the claim by ASMFC that there were two species of cobia from Capt. Reese Stecher of Nags … [Read more...]

White Chocolate Bread Pudding

February 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

By James Friend Dickerson Since my wife, Karen, gets migraine headaches from dark chocolate, I’m always looking for white chocolate recipes. Recently I found a white chocolate bread pudding recipe on Chef John Folse’s web site, which I’ve modified, My family claims that I always make changes, but they seem to keep coming back to the table when I cook. If you like bread pudding, give this a … [Read more...]

Worms In The Driveway

February 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

I went out to get the paper a few days ago and saw a wonderful sight. There was a worm in the driveway after an evening’s rain. That’s a good sign. That means spring is not far away when lawns and gardens will teem with worms. I have always had an affinity for worms, dating back to the days when my dad and I went down to the creek bottom behind our house to dig them for bait. When I had a paper … [Read more...]

Choose Plaice Instead of Flounder

February 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

I went to my local fishmonger, Whole Foods, this week. They haven’t had flounder in a while and I was looking for alternatives. The clerk recommend a fish called Plaice (pronounced place) and said it was very much like flounder, so I bought 4 filets. It was fresh, not previously frozen, I fried it up and it was as good as advertised. Delicious. They catch Plaice off the coast of … [Read more...]

Virginia Saltwater Still Cold

February 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Now that the super cold weather has broken, a handful of anglers are finding their way back on the water. The frigid, ice-cold water took a toll on some Chesapeake Bay stripers and our local speckled trout population. Hopefully not too many were stunned to death. The bay water is still way too cold for much fishing. At Cape Charles the water temperature is 39.0 F. Cape Henry it’s 39.6 F and at the … [Read more...]

Freshwater Overview

February 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Not much happening, but it won’t be long. Freshwater fish react to the longer days and slight upticks in the water temperatures. Yellow perch are generally the harbingers of spring. When they begin their spawn, things start happening. Below is an update.   Potomac River There are some yellow perch biting behind Roosevelt Island. Capt. Steve Chaconas says the best bass … [Read more...]

The Land That Made Me, Me

January 25, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Subscriber Nancy Jackson found this description of Boomer memories floating around on the Internet and it’s worth sharing.   Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot, Before the days of Dylan, or the dawn of Camelot.
There lived a race of innocents, and they were you and me. For Ike was in the White House in that land where we were born, Where navels were for … [Read more...]

Ravenna’s In Dallas

January 25, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Nancy and I just returned from the lighting show at the Dallas Trade Mart where we saw some amazing lighting styles now coming on the market. During our annual visit to the Big D each January, we try to take in some of their great restaurants. Each trip, we go to Pappadeaux’s and eat raw oysters, fried shrimp and fresh seafood. It’s one of our favorite restaurants anywhere. This year, we … [Read more...]

Gobble Up These Turkey Patties

January 25, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Ground turkey is an exceptionally healthy meat, and quite economical. A 4-ounce patty has less that 170 calories and a 20-ounce package of ground turkey is less than $5. But we hardly ever have turkey patties. They are not exciting entrees, to say the least. However! By accident, I have discovered a way to make turkey patties that are fit for kings. A few weeks back, I bought a … [Read more...]
