When I first moved to Charlottesville, I quickly discovered that if there was anything you needed in the way of tools and hardware, Downtown Hardware was the place to go. What a neat store - with hardwood floors and chests and most any tool or doodad imaginable No matter what you needed, they had it and the experienced clerks had all been there since Teddy Roosevelt was president. I loved … [Read more...]
Ribeye Steak and Vegetable Soup
Nancy was under the weather and when she’s not up to snuff, she wants soup. I decided to make her some vegetable beef soup, but with a little variation. Instead of stew beef or chuck, I used ribeye steaks as the beef part. I’m not sure why stew beef is the universal choice for meat in vegetable beef soup. Maybe because it’s cheap. But it is always tough and chewy and has very little … [Read more...]
Save the Trees
Like the Lorax, I speak for the trees, and this Lorax says don’t waste your Christmas tree – recycle it! Christmas is over. It’s time to un-decorate the tree, drag it out to the curb and let the trash guys do their thing. But not so fast! A Christmas tree has many uses after the holiday season is over. For one, it makes ideal cover for small birds as they face the coming winter. On a … [Read more...]
My Flock of Doves
I am proud to say that I have my own personal flock of doves. There are 8, maybe 10 and they are regular visitors to my back yard. They fly in about 7 in the morning, just after I have scattered assorted seeds in the back, and they are delighted to find and eat the seeds that the others pass by. I think they eat some of the whole kernel corn that I also distribute, but mostly the crows and the … [Read more...]
Newton’s Law of the Coffee Pot
There are many mysteries in the universe, but one that has not been solved is the Law of the Coffee Pot. Many scientists including Einstein, Darwin, Tesla, and Newton have studied this phenomenon, and none have come up with even a wild guess about what happens to coffee in a coffee pot. Every morning it’s the same. You carefully pour 10 cups of ordinary water in the coffee pot, then pour the … [Read more...]
Toys of My Life
Spinning Tops It wasn’t a very exciting toy, but if you were a child in the 50’s, you probably had one or two. It was a spinning top, made of tin with elaborate and beautiful painted designs. None of us knew how they worked, but if you pushed the top handle down multiple times, the top began spinning faster and faster and when you released the handle, the top would dance and spin merrily around … [Read more...]
Stripers: Over and Out
The 2024 striper season has largely been disappointing. The big fish are just not coming into the bay as they once did, and who can blame them? The shelves are empty. The once plentiful menhaden have been turned into fish oil and shipped off to Canada. The food simply isn’t there anymore. Yet, some big stripers have been caught in their usual haunts off Cape Charles and live eels have been the … [Read more...]
Some Assembly Required
This Boomer looks back on Christmases Past like Ebenezer Scrooge encountering one of his ghosts. Three words come to mind. Some Assembly Required. You see, I was a young parent in the early 1970s and had a daughter, Angelin, who asked Santa for a complete kitchen set. Stove, refrigerator, sink and cabinets. Santa didn’t have the good sense to tell her this was impossible since Santa’s sleigh … [Read more...]
Bring On the Snow
I snowed this week, enough to cover the ground in a few protected places, then turned to rain I was really hoping for more snow, not to bring on the Christmas Spirit, but to fertilize my freshly tilled garden. Snow? Fertilizer? Good for gardens? Yep. Here’s why. Snow cover helps to preserve and add to soil moisture in the winter. Snow is also known as a poor man’s fertilizer. As … [Read more...]
Sunflower Chips: The Best
I saw a post this week on a Neighborhood site that said Black Oil Sunflower seed was the best buy because all birds can eat it. Not true, Sunflower for birdseed comes three ways: whole, hearts and chips. The whole, black-oil sunflower seeds are ideal for cardinals because cardinals have beaks equipped to break the hulls and then eat the hearts. Doves swallow the seeds whole and their craw … [Read more...]
