A Dose of Monday Morning Folderol

February 15, 2018 by Jim Brewer

By Sherman Shifflett   Lots of rain here, and we needed it badly. Some of our roads are flooded and we had 2-hour delay on school openings. Not sure how much rain we got because I had taken my rain gauge in last fall. Every year it freezes and breaks. I'm guessing between 4-6". My chicken house is about 100 yards downhill from my house and it got flooded - for the first time in 15 … [Read more...]

Sweet Sixteen

February 8, 2018 by Jim Brewer

My grandson, James, turned 16 this week and it reminded me of a magical time when the number 16 was the sweetest of all. Breathes there a Boomer who doesn’t remember what it felt like to turn 16? Sweet sixteen meant one thing – car keys. In West Virginia we didn’t have a learner’s permit, which kids in some states could get when they turned 15 or 15 ½. Nope, for us it meant we had to wait … [Read more...]

Hilton Head Golf Packages

February 8, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Thousands of Virginia golfers pack their sticks and golf shoes and head south to Myrtle Beach. The weather is more congenial, there are hundreds of courses and great incentives each March. But there is another option – where the weather is even nicer, the courses plentiful and great deals abound. That would be Hilton Head, home of over 30 magnificent courses designed by famous names such as … [Read more...]

Mrs. Rowe’s Family Restaurant

February 8, 2018 by Jim Brewer

My first visit to Mrs. Rowe’s Restaurant in Staunton was after a trout fishing trip to the Bull Pasture River. It had been the Opening Day of the season and we had each caught our limits - and were we ever hungry after a long day on the water. I was with Wally, Tommy and Grover Forloines and they insisted we stop and eat at Mrs. Rowe’s. “Order dessert first,” one of my companions said. “They … [Read more...]

Robins, Robins Everywhere

February 8, 2018 by Jim Brewer

It rained one evening recently, and when I looked in my back yard the next morning, all the robins in the Northern Hemisphere were there. Well, maybe not all of them, but there was no robin shortage, for sure. The robins enjoy my back yard because we have leaves as mulch in several spots and they know that where there are leaves, there are worms, grubs and other juicy tidbits. The robins were … [Read more...]

Bacon Wrapped Shad Roe

February 8, 2018 by Jim Brewer

By James Friend Dickerson On a visit to see some North Carolina cousins, two of us slipped away from the family visit, heading to a small coastal river. The Hickory Shad were beginning their annual spawning run so we planned to catch a few. I’d never fished for Hickory Shad and was excited to be included in the adventure. We found a great spot in Windsor, NC and fished along side several … [Read more...]

The Turtleman: Live Action!

February 8, 2018 by Jim Brewer

One of the great reality shows of all time was “Call of The Wildman” staring The Turtleman, Ernie Brown, Jr. Turtleman, along with his friend and sidekick, Neal James, and Ernie’s faithful dog, Lolly, patrolled the backwoods of Kentucky and other states to remove nuisance species from barns, ponds, and the countryside. Ernie’s specialty, naturally, was catching snapping turtles with his … [Read more...]

Sea Bass Season Now Open

February 8, 2018 by Jim Brewer

The Virginia black sea bass season opened Feb. 1 and runs through Feb 28. Remember, a no-cost recreational species permit along with a regular license is required to catch sea bass. The head boats will be running trips and we should have some good reports coming. In the mean time, cod, large red hake, cunners and pollock have been keeping head boat anglers busy while fishing the ocean … [Read more...]

South River Action

February 8, 2018 by Jim Brewer

It’s still winter, but the trout are biting on the South River in Waynesboro. According to Tommy Lawhorne at South River Fly Shop, recent rains have brought the South back to normal levels with lots of nice Rainbows and Browns being caught. Midges are hatching daily and the Early Smoky Sedge Caddis hatch will be starting soon. Rubberlegs Stoneflies, Frenchies, JW Jig Leech, Cinnamon … [Read more...]

All About Cataracts

February 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

No one knows for sure what causes cataracts, but it may have something to do with not eating the required 6 daily helpings of fruits and vegetables and not flossing your eyeballs twice a day. It also seems that age has something to do with developing these nasty little blobs, which can occur unannounced anytime after age 50. There was once a time when I could not only read license plates on … [Read more...]
