James Back In Action

July 26, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Heavy rains early this week roiled the water in the James, but it’s dropping and clearing fast. Should be good fishing by this weekend. Guide L.E. Rhodes reports that the water flow last Monday was 1,130 at Scottsville (before the rain) and the mid-day water temperature was 80 degrees. The best time to fish, he says, is from mid-morning into the afternoon. Smallmouth are eating minnows and … [Read more...]

Flounder, Flounder, Flounder

July 26, 2018 by Jim Brewer

(By TH Spangler and Connie Barbour) Flounder catches are on the rise! They’re being boated along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and on rough bottoms throughout the Bay. Many of the larger fish are coming from near-shore wrecks and artificial reefs. Rudee and Lynnhaven inlets are also holding flounder, along with speckled trout and puppy drum. Captain Craig Paige, Paige II charters enjoyed … [Read more...]

Packing Heat in Junior High

July 19, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Continuing the series on growing up in Lewisburg, WV in the 1950s, a great town and a wonderful time to be young.   There were genuine marksmen in Lewisburg Junior High in 1956. Sharpshooters, you night say. As I would quickly discover, if you didn’t pack heat in self-defense, you would get squirted. Squirt guns, you see, were the weapons of choice among the young people in the … [Read more...]

EZ Homemade Ice Cream

July 19, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Summer evenings and homemade ice cream go together – as Forest Gump would say – like Ginny and Forest, like peas and carrots. Yummy, rich, ice-cold vanilla ice cream churned in a freezer is hard to beat. But it’s a bitch to make. But the ice, mix the ingredients, add rock salt to a hand crank or electric ice cream freezer, wait for the ice cream to churn and set and then comes the cleanup! Last … [Read more...]

The Corner Store In Ruckersville

July 19, 2018 by Jim Brewer

If there was an award for “The Friendliest Store” in Central Virginia, the Corner Store Garden Supply in Ruckersville would be right up there in the rankings. Sometimes, as consumers, we tip toe into a store, hoping the clerks or owners are in a good mood. Sometimes you feel as though you are interrupting, for example, if the personnel in a nursery or garden shop are busy with some project, as … [Read more...]

Backyard Beauties

July 19, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Birds are fun to watch and some birds are as beautiful as the finest works of art. This spring and summer we have been blessed with goldfinches, one of the most spectacular birds of all. We watched this spring as the males began molting and shed their drab olive plumage and slowly, but surely, sprouted brilliant yellow and inky black feathers. They are now in full color and they are … [Read more...]

Patio Gardens

July 19, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Don’t have space for a garden, you say? Do you have a patio or driveway that gets some sun? Then you have space for a great garden. This spring, my wife Nancy decided to plant a patio garden. She had a number of large wooden and pottery planters, and filled them with garden soil, added a little fertilizer and we have already been enjoying the fruits of her labor while my in-ground garden is … [Read more...]

Jimmy O and CrossKeys

July 19, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Our favorite musician and our favorite winery destination? That’s a hard combination to beat, and Jimmy O will be strumming his guitar and playing endangered (oldies) music for a CrossKeys Vineyard audience this Sunday. Cross Keys, located near Weyer’s Cave in the Shenandoah Valley, is noted for terrific Sunday Brunches artfully prepared by Chef Dexter Burgess (formerly with The Greenbrier). … [Read more...]

Cobia and Large Flounder Making Waves

July 19, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Cobia, Cobia, Cobia! There are lots of big ones in the lower bay, some topping 70 pounds. Anglers are chumming up fish and then using live eels or croakers as bait. Some of the best action is coming from York Spit and the Windmill Bar area. There is still plenty of large red drum around. Occasionally sight casters are finding schools on the surface and casting to them. Other reds are being … [Read more...]
