There are only a handful of stores where I know I will be greeted and welcomed and that what ensues will always be a good experience. The Corner Store Garden Center in Ruckersville is such a place. Garden Stores are super busy this time of the year and most don’t have the time or take time to stop and chat with customers and offer advice. When I need a little advice, I know the store owners, … [Read more...]
Saltwater Report
Saltwater fishermen are in a wait and see mode. Waiting for warmer water to see much results. The sea bass just closed, but the tautogs remain active near structure. The bluefin tuna season also closed, but some huge fish were decked in the blue waters. Some puppy drum are biting here and there, but it’s mostly wait and see. … [Read more...]
Buggs Island Crappie
Buggs Island Lake, also known as Kerr Reservoir, is easily the best crappie fishing impoundment on the East Coast. Crappie experts say that you have to go to Texas to find fish as large and as plentiful. A 1-pound crappie at Buggs is a baby and 2-pounders are “ho-hum.” At Buggs Island they catch 3 and occasionally 4-pound crappie. Now those are true slabs. In a recent Crappie Tournament, … [Read more...]
Bye Bye Love
Remembering Don and Phil It was spring 1957. I was playing basketball with Brad Stuart in his driveway when I heard them sing. We stopped shooting hoops and Brad turned up his radio. We listened intently to their hanting harmony. The song on WRON was “Bye Bye Love”. The artists were Don and Phil Everly – the Everly Brothers. Music was a vital part of life for young Boomers and we certainly … [Read more...]
The Old Bojangles
The first Bojangles in Charlottesville opened in the late 1970’s, as memory serves. They set up shop below Hardees which was well established at the corner of Hydraulic Road and Rt. 29. They had their work cut out for them. Staffing was difficult, they spent little on advertising, folks weren’t used to so much spice on their chicken and Hardees was booming. But the little restaurant held its own, … [Read more...]
Picnic Ham Barbeque
Picnic hams were a Sunday dinner staple when I was a boy. How well I remember coming home from church to a home filled with the aroma of picnic ham in the oven. I loved picnic hams, and I dearly loved the leftovers as sandwiches. Picnichams, however, have lost favor with American cooks and shoppers. Rather than picnics, it’s Boston butts, whole pork tenderloins or … [Read more...]
Mardi Gras in Charlottesville
Mardi Gras Day is coming soon, this year on March 4. Hey, let’s head for Bourbon Street and the French Quarter in New Orleans and celebrate. No? Then maybe we can celebrate here in Charlottesville with a visit to Roux Street Café in the Woodbrook Shopping Center. The new restaurant serves authentic Cajun Cuisine made to satisfy spice lovers everywhere with entrees like Cheesy Etouffee, … [Read more...]
Colorful Lighting Designs for 2025
By Nancy B Lighting designers are really thinking outside the box this year. Crystorama, one of our vendors is offering chandeliers, pendants, flush mounts, and sconces in two tone finishes and they are beautiful. The Esme chandelier is hand-blown art glass and shaped like delicate flower petals. So whimsical and glowing with warmth. This chandelier stands out in any … [Read more...]
A Grackle Strategy
I saw one yesterday. A grackle. The first of the year, but there will be more to come. Down in Atlanta they are thick as thieves and my son Jimmie has declared war on the thieving birds as they come in hordes and devour his birdseed. Unless you stop filling your birdfeeders, the grackles will come, but as I advised Jimmie, there is a way to ease … [Read more...]
Muddy Waters
The snow melt has caused the James to rise 5 feet. Lakes are also experiencing muddy waters, but that hasn’t stopped the bass bite at Anna and Smith Mountain. Another 30-pound bag won a recent bass tournament which included a whopping 10-pounder. Smith Mountain tourneys are yielding 25-pound bags for 5 bass. Buggs Island is stained but giving up some nice stripers down lake. Crappie … [Read more...]
