When I get in the mood for Fried Chicken, I gotta have some Fried Chicken or it will haunt me until I do. After a busy day this week, Nancy and I decided to let someone else cook dinner. I had a craving for Fried Chicken and headed for Bojangles. I like KFC, but their prices are really on the upswing. I recently ordered for a bucket of all dark-meat chicken, which they once gave a discount for, … [Read more...]
Signs of Our Times
And Then There was One
About a hundred years ago, the last Whale Oil store closed its doors. Today, Men’s Shops are likewise disappearing. In Charlottesville, where fine men’s’ clothing was once a religion, there used to be Ed Michtom’s, the Young Men’s Shop, Page Foster, Eljo’s and the Men and Boy’s Shop. Now, they are all gone except for the Men and Boy’s Shop on the Downtown Mall. A recent attempt to sell … [Read more...]
Tater Tot Casserole
It’s crunch time. You need an easy entrée and something that everyone will enjoy. This calls for a Tater Tot Casserole, a sure-fire winner and one that’s easy to assemble. There are only 4 ingredients, and it can be ready in less than an hour, start to finish. Here’s how. You’ll need a pound of ground beef (to serve 4), a 16-oz. bag of frozen Tater Tots, 2 C of shredded, sharp cheddar cheese … [Read more...]
Save the Turtles
Save the whales! And save the turtles, too. Spring has sprung, and so too have the turtles from their long winter’s nap. They can be seen piled up basking on logs and on the banks of your local ponds and waterways. Unfortunately, they can also be seen crossing roads as they seek out suitable nesting sites. Although their shells provide formidable protection against predators such as raccoons … [Read more...]
Ava Meets a Gnome
My career as an author of books is off to a rocky start. When the publisher sent out the first copies of Ava Meets a Gnome, the last chapter was missing in action. When they sent over the final proofs earlier, they did not include the last chapter, so they are doing a reprint. If you haven’t ordered a book yet, don’t. Wait a few weeks. I’ll say when. If you have ordered and received a book, … [Read more...]
Blues on a Comeback Trail
Bluefish seem to be making a comeback. Some really nice fish have been caught this spring in both the Bay and in the surf and sounds off Virginia and Carolina. Blues were once the most popular gamefish in saltwater leading to big-dollar tournaments and mass migrations of fishermen to the Carolina Coast in November. Then they largely went away, the big ones anyway. This spring, though, lots of … [Read more...]
Snakeheads in Lake Orange
There were several Northern Snakeheads caught this week – in Lake Orange. The creepy looking fish were first found in Virginia in the Potomac River and the Game Department freaked out. They assumed that this invasive species would drastically affect the native bass populations, so they sent out shocking boats and patrols to eradicate the snakeheads, and that didn’t go well, The Snakes spread to … [Read more...]
Taking a Sunday Drive
In the 50’s and much of the 60s, stores were closed on Sundays. Folks went to church, came home for a big Sunday dinner, and then climbed in the car – the whole family - and went for a Sunday drive. Often Sunday drives were to no place in particular, just to wherever the steering wheel of the old Studebaker led. Sometimes they were out into farmland, or on mountain roads. When guests and … [Read more...]
The Mealworm Fairy
Where are my worms? I am the Mealworm Fairy. I am the one who magically fills the bluebirds’ feeder bowl with fat, juicy mealworms. Sometimes the bluebirds recognize that the Fairy has come, and sometimes they don’t have a clue and wonder where the heck all those worms came from. I have been feeding and observing bluebirds for over 20 years and the one thing I know for certain about these … [Read more...]
