Cobia are in the bay waters now, but it’s catch and rerease until June 15. By then, the bite should be in full swing as more and more of these sleek warriors enter the bay. Surface schools of both cobia and red drum were spotted along the beach last week. The water temp in Poquoson Flats is 65. When it hits 70, look out. The early run of Spanish mackerel and bluefish fizzled some, but there … [Read more...]
Zelda’s Grocery Store.
In 1955, Lewisburg, WV was a painted city by Norman Rockwell, or could have been. Main Street was pretty much it – three blocks or so with a half dozen businesses per block. There were the usual stores – a five and dime, a barbershop, a bank, a savings and loan, some clothing stores, a jewelry store, two pharmacies, a couple small department stores, a record shop, a doughnut shop, and Zelda’s … [Read more...]
Tomatoes on the Way
My 4 tomato plants are loving life. As per the instructions of Mark Levisay, a Tomato-meister of the first degree, I put a tall stake beside each plant and have been strapping the main vines to the stakes as the plants grew. So far, with plenty of both sun and rain, the plants are amazingly healthy, and I got my first serious tomato a week or so back. The tomato is now approaching the size of a … [Read more...]
A Rose-breasted Grosbeak
We had some unexpected company at our birdfeeder this week. A stunning male Rose-breasted Grosbeak stopped by to sample our sunflower hearts. He came in the morning and returned for another snack that afternoon. I am always super excited when a feathered visitor stops by. I had seen a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak once or twice in the past, and what a beautiful bird - jet black feathers on his … [Read more...]
Calling Mr. Appliance
I was baking a batch of brownies and set the oven at 315. Fifteen minutes later, there was smoke in the kitchen. The oven had fried the brownies – it was a tray of chocolate charcoal. The oven, obviously, was on the blink so we called around, looking for someone who could work on and get parts for an older model GE, and had no luck. Finally, we called a company called Mr. Appliance, offering … [Read more...]
Pork Ribeye Steaks
I saw them at Harris Teeter – Boneless Pork Ribeye Steaks from a company called Villari. I love beef ribeyes. Why not try the pork? I did and they were good. I decided to grill them as I would a beef ribeye steak. I took them out beforehand and let them get close to room temperature and pre-seasoned them with salt, pepper and a little John Boy & Billy’s Pork Rub. I put the steaks on a … [Read more...]
Beside the Pond
It was a lazy afternoon. Nancy was out of town. I headed for the back yard, settled in my front row seat beside our goldfish pond, lit up a cigar and enjoyed a splash of Evan Williams Small Batch bourbon. My first encounter with a backyard critter was a cottontail rabbit. He hopped down the sidewalk, took one look at me and figured I was way too old and out of shape to give chase. So, he … [Read more...]
A Nice Bass
Lake Orange, owned and managed by the DWR, is one of the top trophy largemouth destinations in the state. The Game Department intensely manages the lake and has imposed a 16″ to 22″ protective slot limit. A large shad and sunfish population stimulates growth. The huge bass above was landed this week at Orange, plus lots of nice crappie, channel cats and bluegills. Water temps … [Read more...]
I Got One!
On the OBX, lots of boats made it through the inlet and the fishing was steady from the piers and the surf. There were good reports of Sheepshead, Spanish, Bluefish, and Cobia all weekend. Bonita and Black Sea Bass have also been biting. Cobia to 54.5 pounds have been weighed at TWs Tackle. Sea Mullet, Spanish, Bluefish, Croaker, and Trout are biting in the surf and from the piers. The … [Read more...]
To Furnish a House
When Nancy and I first married, we lived in a furnished basement apartment. The only furniture I owned was a stereo, a 19-inch GE TV and a guitar. Nancy had a single bed and dresser to match. But we were expecting our first child and we bought a house for $19,500 – the best investment we ever made. It was a modest home with 3 bedrooms, a bath, and a full unfinished basement, but it would be a … [Read more...]
