I am always looking for side dishes to serve with Tex-Mex entrees. The Tacos, Burritos and Enchiladas are easy. It’s the stuff that goes with them that I struggle with. Recently, looking for something to pair with Tacos, I came up with this concoction – a Mexican Pasta Salad. I started with a pound of elbow macaroni, though I suppose any pasta would work. To the cooked macaroni, I added 1 can … [Read more...]
Tony’s Diner and Restaurant
For almost a decade, Michael’s Restaurant at Hollymead has been filling the bellies of many patrons. Now, it’s Tony’s satisfying the same appetites. But it’s really still the same old Michaels. Tony, the owner, bought Michaels about 9 years ago, but left the name the same. Recently, he decided to use his own name on the storefront, so now it’s Tony’s and nothing has changed. My good friend … [Read more...]
Making Stylish Fan Selections is a Breeze
When customers come into Nancy B’s showroom, we spend time answering questions about the fans we offer. With new technology and materials, today’s ceiling fans deliver comfort everywhere in the home, even outdoors. We know fans create a breeze that is cooling and provides us comfort. Fans also help heat a room by changing the direction of the blade rotation. Adding a fan can result … [Read more...]
A Sunflower Sunset
This spring, Nancy and I drove to Burnside Farms in Nokesville for their Tulip Festival. The flowers were beautiful, the food delicious and it was a wonderful experience. Burnside Farms plants millions of tulips in dazzling colors and the lovely flowers are in display for just a couple weeks. After the tulips bloom, Burnside turns their attention to sunflowers and that season is now underway. … [Read more...]
Fishing in the Rain
By Hunter Campbell/DWR One of the great songs of the past was Gene Kelly as he was dancing and “Singing in the Rain”. Hunter Campbell with the Division of Wildlife Resources is singing “Fishing in the Rain”, and it works. Some of my great fishing days have come when it’s raining, but why? Here’s what Mr. Campbell has to say. Fishing in the rain may not sound ideal to most people, but many … [Read more...]
Talking Spanish
Fishing in the Bay is out of sight and offshore excursions are getting better by the day. Along Virginia’s coast and well up into the Bay, Spanish mackerel are going after Clark and Drone spoons trolled slowly behind planers or in-line sinkers. The piers also report good Spanish action Sheepshead are also bending poles. In fact, a whopping 18-pounder was caught this week. Anglers are having the … [Read more...]
I Met Newt
Over the 4th of July weekend, and feeling ultra-patriotic, Nancy and I joined friends on a trip to Trump Winery for lunch and wine. If you’ve never been, the entranceway to the property is lined with literally a thousand American flags, so you can’t help but feel proud to be an American, and it’s like you expect Lee Greenwood to pop out and start singing “God Bless the USA.” We had just taken … [Read more...]

Kroger’s is on My “Short” List
Actually, it’s not a short list, but something close to short. I find it harder and harder to shop at Kroger’s, even though it’s right across the highway. I made a quick run there yesterday and saw a counter piled high with Reynold’s aluminum foil. It said, “Buy 5 and get 1 Free.” Why would anyone want 6 boxes of aluminum foil – unless maybe they had a warehouse for storage? We have a hard … [Read more...]
Jim’s Cucumber Farm
This spring I mapped out my small garden and actually stuck to the plan, with one exception. In the end I did not have room for cucumbers. Last year, I planted a few hills, but the cucumbers did not read the part on the seed packet about growing and producing. They quickly petered out and died and I may have picked two or three shriveled cucumbers. “But what if I planted a few hills on the edge … [Read more...]
