Recently, VDOT completed an overhead walkway/bikeway across Route 29 south of the Post Office. I suppose the endeavor cost in the neighborhood of $5 million. The walkway goes from Burton’s Steakhouse over to Burger King. I suppose the rationale of our all-knowing government was that someone who just had a $50 steak at Burton’s, but couldn’t afford an automobile, would then be able to walk across the highway and pick up an order of fries at Burger King.
Or maybe somebody who had three bags of groceries they bought at Trader Joe’s could then walk a half mile over to Snap Fitness and back again with three bags of groceries. I have driven beneath the overhead monstrosity on numerous occasions since its completion and have yet to see a bike or a pedestrian.
For what they spent to build the Footbridge to Nowhere, they could have hired 2 permanent Uber derivers – one on each side of the highway – to take wayward pedestrians to their ultimate destinations.
Don’t you love our tax money at work!
