More and more localities are using cameras, not only to catch those running red lights, but also for speeding. And they are raising hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some in the Virginia legislature are trying to reign in this revenue scheme, but for now: Watch out.
One place to be especially careful of is along I-64 below Richmond. There is about a 20 mile stretch where VDOT is doing road work in an effort to widen the highway, and the speed limit drops from 70 down to 60, and that’s where they get you. It would be easy to continue to do 70 in that area because it’s still 4-lanes and the traffic moves quickly – cars zooming past if you slow down to the 60-mph limit. Since it’s a Work Zone, the fines can be severe.
So, use caution on that stretch. Personally, I wouldn’t go a mile over 65. It’s a serious speed trap.
