If I was on death row and the warden asked what I might want to eat for my last meal, I’d think long and hard about a Foot Long Hot Dog Platter from Jak’n Jill in Charlottesville.
I happen to love hot dogs. I even enjoy a plain old boiled dog on a bun with a little catsup – like you’d get a Little League baseball game. But the Foot Long Hot Dogs at Jak’n Jil are something else indeed.
The restaurant has a commanding menu with burgers and club sandwiches, fresh salads (their Greek Salad is superb), comfort food selections like Liver & Onions, Broasted Chicken Platters, Hamburger Steak and Spaghetti. They also have homemade soups and pies and their onion rings are among the best in town.
But their Foot Long Hot Dogs are to die for!
The combination of a steamed bun, homemade chili, a delightful slaw and crispy onions is a perfect match for the 12-inch dogs. Their fries, sprinkled with a Cajun seasoning, are also terrific.
Jak’n Jil is one of those kind of places you would take an out of town guest. My sister, Johanna, comes to visit from her home in Houston about once a year, and on each trip, she and I try to make at least one visit to Jack & Jil, and both of us order the Foot Long Platter.
If you have never had a Jak’n Jil Foot Long Hot Dog with homemade chili, you are missing out on one of the most delicious offerings on the menu of any Charlottesville restaurant. Jak ‘n Jill is located at 1404 E. High Street and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. They are closed on Sundays and do not take credit cards, so bring a little cash and enjoy!
