Burpless 26.
If you are a backyard gardener, remember that name. It’s the damnedest cucumber there is. Prolific, sweet and tender.
Last spring I was at the Corner Garden Store at Ruckersville and said I wanted to plant some long cucumbers, like English cucumbers. Their knowledgeable staff recommended a product call Burpless 26. I put four in the ground in Early May, but rabbits (I suspect) mowed three of them down and had started chewing on the 4th vine. I immediately covered it with a net and figured I would be buying my all cukes from Kroger’s this summer.
But the Little Cuke didn’t give up.
“I think I can, I think I can, I think I can…” he said.
And the lonely vine sprouted in all directions and we since have enjoyed dozens and dozens of cucumbers this summer from that one plant – and he’s not through yet. I get 2 or 3 on a regular basis.
Next summer, I will again plant Burpless 26, but this time I will protect the plants until they are established.
One of the best things about Burpless 26 is the flavor. The cukes are sweet, tender and are ideal either for canning pickles or eating raw in salads.
Next summer, plant Burpless 26. You won’t be disappointed. They will be available at the Corner Garden Store.
