One of my (many) weaknesses as a wanna-be farmer is the actual sewing of the seeds. My garden is not smooth and loamy. It’s more the consistency of a rock pile as the clods of red clay dominate. Therefore, it’s difficult to create that fine soil for planting that young seeds prefer.
But I’ve found a way, a better way for me, anyway.
I have been hoeing and chopping the garden as best I can, but then I create a trench row in the dirt with a spade, then I pour fertilized garden soil over the top of the row. Next, I plant the seeds in the soft soil, cover them with a bit of dirt, tamp them down and it’s done. The seeds are happy, and I’m happy not to have to do all that chopping and raking.
If I had 10 acres to farm, I’d be in deep doo-doo, but with a 50’ x 12’ plot, it works for me and it sure saves a lot of work.
