When my oldest daughter, Angelin, was a tiny little thing, she was fascinated with seeds and small objects she found in the grass. As soon as she was outside, she would start gathering things, gripping them tightly in her small hands.
We asked what she had and she said, “Seeds-zez”
She held them throughout the day and we had to pry them away at bedtime. She loved to collect “seeds-zez”.
I do, too, especially this time of the year when my seeds go into Jiffy pots to emerge later as healthy cucumber or squash plants.
This spring I resisted the urge to plant my “seeds-zez” too early. I usually do. The little plants generally arrive early with no place to go until the frost date has passed. But this year I waited until early March to stick a few cucumber and squash seeds in the growing pots.
I used to start tomatoes as “seeds-zez”, but my garden seems to prefer plants already started than the spindly vines I sometimes. grow in the pots.
I put my seeds in small grow pots in a window with morning sun. Later, when they are up and at ‘em, I’ll take them outside for brief periods, gradually introducing them to direct sunlight.
I have also discovered that if I put the Jiffy pots in small aluminum trays and keep the tray bottoms filled with water, the pots draw the water up to the seeds and I don’t have to worry about daily watering or too much watering. So, my “seeds-zez” are now in the pots and should be breaking through any day.
Another spring has arrived. I know that when I start buying and collecting “seeds-zez” myself.
