Sometimes you get lucky.
This spring I bought two varieties of lettuce to plant in the upper part of my garden which doesn’t get as much sun, and very little grows there. Lettuce, spring onions and potatoes usually occupy that space.
I know about Black Simpson leaf lettuce, that does well. So, I bought a package of those seeds, then saw a pack of red romaine lettuce. Why not? I bought it, planted it, and it not only grew well, it’s also delicious. Good timing, too. Lettuce at the stores has been way high. Two bucks for a small head – or more
The thing I like about this variety is that when it grows taller, it does not get bitter. At least not yet. Clip just a few leaves and you have a delicious salad green.
You might consider this variety next spring (or perhaps this fall). I am well pleased – and lucky.
