Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good – especially in a vegetable garden.
My little garden has really not performed as I would like, in spite a lot of rain and a lot of sun. My cukes were so-so, my squash crop was pitiful and other plantings were hit and miss. But along about June when I pulled up my early sweet peas, I decided to put a few short rows of green beans in their place. I had a pack of seeds left over from a previous year. They were bush beans, but I don’t remember the exact variety. I just stuck them in the ground, wished them well and forgot about them. The plants did okay, though one cucumber vine dominated one of the short rows. Then I noticed a few small green beans coming along. This past weekend, I picked them, and gathered over 200 absolutely, beautiful string beans. They were young and tender without a single blemish, and they all came in at the same time, enough for a nice mess of beans. I cooked them gently with a little country ham seasoning and they were delightful.
Lucky me. That picking of green beans almost makes up for a less than stellar gardening season.
I just wish I had remembered the name of the little fellows so I could plant them again next year.
