As usual, February is hit or miss for offshore charters, but Tuesday was calm, and one boat sailed out of Pirate’s Cove. The Trophy Hunter hooked, landed, and released a huge bluefin tuna. Nice puppy drum have been beached at Hatteras.
Puppy drum have also been biting in Virginia back in almost all the inlets. Specks have been caught in the same areas. Those who can make it offshore are hammering the tautogs and flounder on the ocean wrecks.
Freshwater
Lovely weather on Wednesday had fish moving shallow but a cold snap on Thursday slammed the door on a promising bite. Some very nice smallmouth have been caught on the James as water temps move into the 50s.Yellow perch are becoming more and more active on all the tidal rivers. Reports say that Smith Mountain Lake has been a largemouth hotspot in recent days. Crappie, stripers, and bass are stirring in Lake Anna and Buggs Island. Walleye are being caught in the upper sections of Lake Anna.
