For the second week in a row, Nags Head is the recommended destination for a CvilleBuzz Road Trip. That’s because while the striped bass fishing in Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay is still slow and the fish and bait are scattered, the stripers in the sound at Nags Head are thick as thieves and hungry.
It’s even better this week than the week before, says Guide Capt. Reese Stecher of Beach Bum Guide Service.
“The stripers are all over the sound,” he said. “It’s almost as good as it was a few years back.”
Stecher’s clients are tossing jigs to the feeding schools and are returning with limits of stripers to 22-inches. The limit this year in North Carolina is three fish per person. So a party of three (with the captain’s help) could bring in a dozen fish, more than enough for a great fish fry.
But even if you don’t fish or care about striped bass, Nags Head is a splendid destination in the fall. The weather is mild and inviting and the tourists have dispersed. Many local stores offer great sales through the end of the year and the seafood restaurants are now serving up fresh oysters and shrimp along with fresh catches of fish – Mahi-Mahi, flounder, tuna, mackerel and the like.
So hurry down to Nags Head. If you need a good charter captain, call Capt. Reese Stecher at (252) 449-0232 or go to www.beachbumfishing.com to book a trip.
