Nancy and I have been married a long time. Claudius was Emperor of Rome when we tied the knot. We have long passed the Gold and Diamond Anniversaries and are now in the Moon Rocks of Venus category – and Andrew Minton Jewelry has sold out of Venusian Moon Rock Rings. So, for this year’s anniversary we’re going to Jamaica, Mon’.
I didn’t know much about Jamaica except it’s warm, even in early March. For recent anniversary celebrations, we have been squeezing out a few days at Nags Head, where it’s not warm. I can tolerate 45 degrees and a northeast wind on the Carolina coast, but most of the restaurants are closed during this, the off season. The oceanfront resort where we will stay in Jamaica has restaurants aplenty.
I considered a shorter trip to Bermuda, but our travel agent said it’s around 60 degrees when we would go, and Jamaica would be in the mid-80’s. That was an easy choice.
If I had to point Jamaica out on a map, I would have had trouble. I knew it was down in the Caribbean somewhere, but exactly where I didn’t know. It happens to be a little south of Cuba and it’s a slightly smaller island.
Unlike Haiti and some other Caribbean countries, Jamaica has a middle-income economy and it’s under British rule. The island nation has a population of 2.8 million, and Kingston (as in Trio) is the capital.
I hear they have a great bob sled team and make some terrific Jerk Chicken. I’m going to pack a rod and reel in our suitcase and see if there are any bonefish around. I also plan to sample some of their rum – the best in the world.
When we return from the trip in mid-March, I’ll give everyone a full account, Mon’.
